Introduction

The more I taste, the more I realize that this vintage was extraordinarily variable in Germany. This is not a year that allows you to throw a dart and be guaranteed of finding a winner. Many of the wines simply do not have great acidity or flavor interest. Granted, this group was comprised of mostly low end wines, but let's just say that they bore little resemblance to the puffed up, flowery prose with which the importer described them. The cutesy names of 2 wines didn't magically help them taste better either.

  • 2007 Weingut Alexander Gysler Weinheimer Hölle Silvaner halbtrocken

    Germany, Rheinhessen

    Dark yellow with amber-very strange. Not much here on the nose. Viscous with lowish acidity, some faint orange peel. Its glycerine makes it seem sweeter than it really is. Bitter finish and altogether fairly uninteresting. I have never had a Silvaner that struck me as anything but anonymous and bland.

  • 2007 Weingut Josef Leitz Riesling Eins Zwei Dry "3"

    Germany, Rheingau

    Medium yellow. Bright, citric nose. Lighter than its 11% alcohol would suggest. Evanescent apply fruit but dry, short, and bitter. I'm not getting much out of this at all. It does live up to the "dry" part of its name, though.

  • 2007 J & HA Strub Riesling "Soil to Soul"

    Germany, Rheinhessen

    Full yellow with some green; again, the depth is bizarre for a wine of this age. Minty nose. Sweet, simple, darker toned peach fruit without much acidic balance.

  • 2007 Dönnhoff Riesling

    Germany, Nahe

    Properly pale. High toned, lively nose. Light to medium weight, ripe but dry with apricot fruit, very good acidity, and decent length. The drop in alcohol was noticeable (and welcome) after the first few wines in the series. Good but not special for this level.

  • 2007 Johann Wilhelm Schild Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    Pale. Baby powder and peach aromatics. Surprisingly weighty, sweet, and viscous with a touch of botrytis. This is lacking in acidity and drinks more like a heavyweight Auslese from outside the Mosel. Fuzzy and dull; this needs a lot more snap.

  • 2007 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Auslese #17

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    Medium yellow. Finally, a wine with some complexity and detail. Light frame with a nice interplay of honey, citrus, and stone fruit. Average acidity and finish. Good but not spectacular, and not living up to the promise of the nose and entry.
