Introduction
A simple getogether put together by William with a theme supposedly for aged wines but there were a few young ones joining in the fray.
2002 Gustave Lorentz Pinot Gris Kanzlerberg 85 Points
France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
Beautifully glowing yellow gold that would have had me guessing a middle aged sauternes. Lots of orange peels and sweet dried flowers. Relatively dry palate. Tinge of oranges and bitter pith in a glass of mineral water. Oily mouthfeel. Had some nectarines on the finish but rather more of a classically bitter sweet style. Interesting and I actually quite enjoy it.

Nicely dainty sweet and a shade of almost greenish leaves. Stewed watery style of winter melon soup with rock sugar and a good sprinkle of sour plum powder finishing with orange peel.

1996 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Clos des 60 Ouvrées 88 Points

Fresh cherries, hawthorne berries and some stinky wet mushrooms peeking through. Some grassiness and lots of strawberries though far from the nice elegantly ripened type that I last remembered from this wine. However, over time the nose did open beautifully to stewed hawthorne with some soupiness but seems somewhat different still from the first bottle I had before. It was just not so as expressive. This one had a fresher paalte with wonderfully vibrant glowing fruits. More of an underaged blossoming lady about to hit her prime.

Dark soy sauce on wet earth, gula melaka, sweet plums and coconut candy. Salty sweet cherries on a thick dense mouthfeel but not viscous. Finishes with some cigarette ash. It is quite elegant with classical sweetness.

Plumish nose. Tired on the palate with aged cherries, some wet wood and a lift of flowers. Still showing some flesh and too bad though.

Dark soy sauce notes and decompost with soil. Got some smelly dried sweaty socks. Partially ripe cherries , red dates and chalky tannins. Pretty modern.

A steaming plate of green capsicums and leather bits. Lovely elegant fleshy cherries. Velvety tannins. Very right bank. This feels lusher and rounder than the other 99 Volpaia Chianti Classico that we tasted side by side.

1997 Château Pontet-Canet 83 Points

Loads of green peppers. Tarish, slightly toasty. Approachable with reasonably nice and resonating red fruits. Typical pauillac leathery notes as well as interesting sweet tobacco shows through too. Just a dissappoints on the short finish. If not, this would be a beautifully good value for an unlike vintage.
