Introduction

I'm so glad I finally got out to Mike's home. He's got a lovely house and nothing beats his homemade cooking. The pics he posts in food and wine don't do him justice. Four different pizzas, bacon wrapped dates, homemade garlic knots. Quite the spread. Thanks, Mike.

The wines were lovely. I was turned on to something I've never had before - Buccella. I was blown away. Mark Herald made it at one point. Now it's made by Celia Masyczek. Outstanding. The best cab I've had in a while.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2001 BOND Matriarch

    USA, California, Napa Valley

This was nice, but restrained. There was nothing about it that reached out to grab your attention nor was there anything in its balance that was attention grabbing etiher. OK. I had it in Oct and really liked it.

  • 2001 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, Napa Valley

This was just OK. But that's all it was. There was lots of acetone that never blew off. I don't think the bottle was off, necessarily, but I was unimpressed, by a lot.

  • 2001 Justin Vineyards & Winery Isosceles Reserve

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

This was the number two wine of the night. 73% cab, 18% cab franc, the rest malbec, petit verdot and merlot(?). This was an interesting wine that really made me want to take some time and contemplate it. There was some olive here and more flavors here than in the first two. No alcohol showing. Very nice.

  • 2004 Maybach Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Materium

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

This was very nice and I like it, but I'm not sure it is as good as the 2005. I wish I'd have decanted it longer. All in, it got about three hours of air.

  • 2001 Beringer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Black olives on the nose and mouth. I didn't love this.

  • 2004 Buccella Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, Napa Valley

This wine was outstanding! I'd never heard of it, recently acquired it and signed up for the mailing list as soon as I got home. Loads of dark fruit in the aroma and sweet dark blackberries. Great mouthfeel. Completely balanced. I'm really glad I have two more. This awesome. I decanted it for two hours at home and it probably got another two at Mike's.

  • 2003 Slaughterhouse Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

This was not like the others. It didn't have the heft in the midpalate or the finish that the others did. I wondered if it was cab. Loads of fruit, a lot of it red, not much else. Bright, but not great.

  • 2001 Forman Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, Napa Valley

This was earthy. It didn't have much fruit. I didn't care for it.
