The Dallas 2nd Wednesday Group met at Mi Piaci's in Addison for our February 2009 tasting. Our theme this month was Italians wines. Everybody was forced to declare wines in advance and no more than two of the same types of wine were allowed, leading to quite a bit a variety across the boards. Now onto the show...

• NV Jacques Chaput Champagne Cuvée Calypso Brut 90 Points

  Opened and served immediately. Light yellow to yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout with fine and steady beading. A little matchstick up front on the nose quickly followed by notes of yellow pears, yellow apples and some pie dough. Tangy flavors on the palate of yellow apples, yellos pears and a bit of lemon zest on the medium to long finish. Bright acidity, medium to full body. Drink over the short to medium term. Sorry, no disgorgement information noted at the time. Might even be worth another WIML point or two. Need to revisit.

• 2004 Suavia Soave Classico Le Rive 90 Points

  Opened and served immediately. Yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of graham crackers, parafin, flowers and pears. Flavors of yellow pears, yellow apples and some light creme notes on the short to medium finish. Light to medium acidity, light to medium body. Drink now. Can't recall the last time I had a Soave with this much age. Interesting from an intellectual stand point but this wine is tiring.

  Opened and decanted for sediment about 30 minutes before serving. Followed over about 3 hours and never really wavered. Light brownish color in the glass. slightly opaque looking. Nose of leather, fennel, anise and later on with some time in glass a little note of smoke. Flavors of berries, strawberries, cherries and a base of minerals. Medium acidity, fully resolved tannins, medium body. Drink now.

  Opened and served immediately. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Very new world like on the nose and palate with aromas of mocha, cinnamon, talc and perfume. Flavors of berries, raspberries and chaerries with a slightly earhty yet short finish. Medium acidity and tannins, light to medium body. Drink over the short term.

  Opened and served immediately. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Tight nose giving way to notes of perfume, shale and a hint of plums hiding underneath. Flavors dominated up front by Bing cherries with added notes of berries. Medium acidity, firm tannins, medium to full body. Needs more time in bottle so I'd recommend holding. Would've scored it closer to the WIML90+/- range but docked a couple of points for the slightly hot finish.

  Opened and served immediately. Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of cigar box, perfume and melted black licorice. Flavors of berries, cherries, red licorice and a little bit of bitters on the medium finish. Medium to bright acidity, still fairly firm tannins, medium to full bodied. Decant for at least an hour if opening now or continue to hold.

  Opened and served immediately. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Really odd nose of burnt rubber dominated with some added notes of briar patch and berries. Simple berries on the palate with a touch of anise on a clipped finish. Tart acidity, medium tannins, medium body. Something was off with this bottle so no rating.

  Opened and served immediately. Garnet to dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of berries and potpourri. Good flavors of berries with some added notes of cherries. Light to medium acidity, medium to integrated tannins, medium bodied. Drink or hold over the short term, maybe medium term.

  Opened and glass decanted a couple of hours before serving. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of cigar box, black berries, melted black licorice and a bit of perfume. Rich flavors of black berries and cherries. Medium acidity, medium to firm tannins, medium to full bodied. Can be drank now with time in the decanter or slow-O overnight but I'd recommend continue holding a little while longer.

Light and nimble on the palate with flavors of orange, lychee and syrup soaked pears. Light to medium acidity, light to medium body. Drink or hold. Quite interesting.
