Illinois Winery Visit

Introduction

Annette and I decided to spend President's Day sipping wine. We wanted to try some Illinois wine made from imported grapes. My daughter Emily met us for the first winery and a late lunch.

Flight 1 - Lynfred Winery (7 Notes)

On Roselle Road, beautiful faciity and tasting room. Emily joined Annette and I at this one.

Flight 2 - Cooper's Hawk Winery and Restaurant (11 Notes)

The fourth, this one is in South Barrington. Started in Orland Park. All 4 have wineries, tasting rooms, retail and restaurants.

  • NV Cooper's Hawk Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs 84 Points

    USA, American

    Green apple, pear, melon, hints of sweetness, finish is a tiny bit off. For $13.99 not too bad.

  • 2007 Cooper's Hawk Pinot Gris 85 Points

    Tasted like Oregon grapes, but not sure. Good fruit. Buttery mouth feel. Pears, melons, done in steel and quite round.

  • 2007 Cooper's Hawk Viognier 88 Points

    Nice, nice wine. Sourced from Napa. honeysuckle nose predominated, with peach and oak and guava and even a hint of citrus The flavors paralleled the nose mostly, but the peach became a huge apricot stone fruit flavor. Simply nice and quite drinkable. Buterry styled wine, like their pinot gris. Done in oak, not over oaked.

    Tropical fruit, butterscotch, citruc and pineapple, lacked acid and was too rounded and soft. Lacked acid balance. Drinkable. Cali sourced grapes.

  • 2007 Cooper's Hawk Pinot Noir 89 Points

    The nose is all strawberry and raspberry. This wine has nice mushroom earthiness, strawberry and raspberry, and big lavender on the finish.

    55% Cab, 45% Tannat, chocolate nose. Tobacco, cassis. Deep and intense. Lots of fruit. Nice wine.

  • 2006 Cooper's Hawk Shiraz 83 Points

    This was a really good wine except in the middle. The nose was all mulberies and coffee. Beautiful. The fruit forward flavors of plummy berry was fun. Then it disappeared until I got some of a coffee finish. Lacks something to cause that hole in flavors. Otherwise quite intersting. 95% Shiraz, the rest is cab, merlot and viognier.

Closing

We had a blast and were pleaseantly surprised. We bought 12 bottles of wine plus one for Emily. It was a very enjoyable day!
