Introduction

So the spirit of this evening was to open "new" things we were interested to taste and hopefully gain an opinion on some wines before it's time to buy the next vintage. This worked for me on the Kosta Browne - I liked it and it's time to buy again so I know what to do. Per usual, I found two new wines that I really enjoyed and hope to have again. The Pax (the most I've ever enjoyed a Pax) and my first Brewer Clifton. A fun evening. The notes are pretty sparse, but here they are.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2006 Aubert Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

I did not care for this in the least. All I got was acid. I had the 2002 bottle in 07 and felt the same way. Maybe time isn't going to help this for me. :(

  • 2006 Carlisle Syrah James Berry Vineyard

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

I decanted this for five hours and it showed nothing. A little anise on the nose , perhaps, and I'm stretching for that. No pleasure in this now. Not a bit.

  • 2006 Pax Syrah Walker Vine Hill

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

A great wine. This was a joy to taste. We opened it (but didn't decant) for about 45 mins. Dark fruit, sweet and great mouthfeel. I'd like to have this again. Thanks, Jay.

  • 2005 Brewer-Clifton Pinot Noir Ashley's Vineyard

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

This was my first Brewer-Clifton and I loved it. My favorite on the table. Not a huge wine, but sweet and fruit forward and ready to go right out of the bottle. I liked this and I particularly think I'm enjoyind Santa Rita Hills bottles lately.

  • 2006 La Fenêtre Pinot Noir Calmant Creek

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

This was okay, but not good. I got acid with some sweet fruit, but not much. It was fresh with lots of stuff going on, but it just didn't come together as good. Maybe it is too early for me to claim my love of Santa Rita Hills?

  • 2006 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

I really enjoyed this. Five hour decant. Spice and a little alcohol on the nose. Pepper, sweet, a very slight medicinal quality that passed. This was good.

  • 2004 Paolo Bea Montefalco Rosso San Valentino

    Italy, Umbria, Montefalco, Montefalco Rosso

Bob served this blind, but he'd told me it was from Italy. I wouldn't have otherwise known. It tasted new world and didn't have Italian terrior as I've come to expect it. Not for me, but okay.

  • 2007 Municipal Winemakers

    USA, California, Central Coast

This was nice. Many thanks and congratulations to Dave Potter for making this and sharing it with us. It was only two days in the bottle, so clearly, this was the youngest of the babies we opened on Thursday! This is 70% syrah and 30% cab. This had dark fruit and a really smooth finish and great mouthfeel. I got some cola on the finish and it was pleasantly tart. Enjoyable.
