Introduction

An impromptu vertical dissection of Rauzan-Gassies from 375ml bottles.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2001 Château Rauzan-Gassies 78 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Initially big on alc and very piercing on the nose. Progressively, this put on more typical seductive margaux nose of milky dense aromas of small light blue flowers, lots of earthy undertones. The fruits of this bottle had all but gone and showed mostly secondary notes of dried herbs, dried fruits and bitter cocoa tannins. Falls apart too easily on the mid-palate.

  • 2002 Château Rauzan-Gassies 81 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Smoke from a smothering fire underlined by floral tones. Primarily berryish but with a sudden burst of beef jerky and meatiness. A disturbing streak of bitter roots and slightly hollow though.

  • 2003 Château Rauzan-Gassies 83 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Round and wide nose of coffee mocha, dark flowers. Plush dark fruits and juicer dark berries accented by oak, pencil shavings and complex smokiness.

  • 2004 Château Rauzan-Gassies 82 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Zingy dried orange zest on a bed of flowers and placed on a hot zinc roof. Balanced approach of silky red currant fruits and light blue flowers. Fine tannins. Very fairly styled.

Closing

In general, consistent level of quality except that it is not exactly the best example for a 2nd growth bordeaux. That said, its price tag is also not telling of its 2nd growth status.
