  Enjoyed this. Another Brunello that's tickled me, unashamedly ready with a lovely balance of gently sweet fruit and fresh as a daisy acidity. Lacking a little complexity perhaps but juicy and satisfying.

• 1999 Castello di Ama Chianti Classico

  One of my favorite Chianti's and one where I find some of the feminine grace of a good Margaux .Brilliantly weighted wine, that's all elegance and silk whilst shouldering a subtly concentrated and remarkably persistent palate of fruit and forest. Delicious.

• 2001 Pieropan Soave Classico La Rocca

  One of my votes for Italy's best whites wold have to go for this, brilliantly made, consistent and most of all delicious. This was showing some nice golden maturity, rich & honeyed with a pineapple vibe. Still pretty fresh and displaying a fair bit of minerality. Great starter wine, goes with a lot of food.

• 1990 Fattoria Selvapiana Chianti Rùfina Riserva

  I've been working my way through my case of these with haste with varying success, as the wine has seen better days, it's not yet in the twilight of its life, but its pretty close to sunset. The case has been a mixed bag some very poor, butt one of the better bottles prompted a note. Leathery and bistecca aromas and a unusually fresh and fairly fine palate with ripe fruit that quivers on the edge of decay. Finishes slightly firm and dusty, but the shepherd's pie deals with that well enough. More interesting than great.
