Introduction

A gorgeous Tuesday afternoon was good occassion for the unveiling of a new importer's line.

Flight 1 - Errazuriz Estate, Chile (8 Notes)

Interesting and mostly solid collection of whites. Dominant burnt rubber elements in the Bdx wines makes me wonder about the cellar practices though.

Flight 2 - Nicholas Joly (3 Notes)

Ah, this is why I came to this tasting. A deeply compelling set of wines.

  • 2003 Nicolas Joly Savennières Les Clos Sacrés (Les Vieux Clos)

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières

    Clear, straw colour. Wild nose with nail polish, shoe shine and citrus rind fruit leading into saline/Islay scotch whang. Big flavors all over the place - more Scotch, kaffir lime, epazote, limestone. Long persistent finish with pink peppercorn spice. Great stuff.

  • 2003 Nicolas Joly Savennières Roche aux Moines Clos de la Bergerie

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières Roche aux Moines

    Softer nose than the Clos Sacres, but much of the same. Nice acidic zip, ginger and spices. More citrus and mineral notes. Less complex, but more balance and directness. Very persistent finish with sherry notes.

  • 2002 Nicolas Joly Clos de la Coulée de Serrant

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières-Coulée de Serrant

    Light nose, very shy, with tangerine, sweetness. A tight wine, almost tannic in feel. Big body and loads of mineral dust, bergamot (Earl Grey tea) and lanolin. Less oxidative than other years with no sherry notes. Long finish with different waves of the preceeding elements. Young, this wine takes years to really shine, but one of the best I have had at this young. Delicious and great potential. Wish I gave scores to offset the other note here on CT.

Flight 3 - Mount Nelson, NZ (1 Note)

Some sort of Antinori family venture down in the Antipodes.

Flight 4 - Schiopetto (5 Notes)

I was looking forward to this set as well, but was disappointed. The wines aren't bad, the sticker price is far above their value.

Flight 5 - D'Alessandro (3 Notes)

On to Super-Tuscan zones here.

Flight 6 - Campo di Sasso (1 Note)

Flight 7 - Enrico Santini (2 Notes)

  • 2003 Enrico Santini Bolgheri Poggio Al Moro

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri

    Big fruit nose, like an Aussie Shiraz. Menthol and smoke. Blackberries and seeds, puffed rice notes. Good in a way, but very atypique.

  • 2001 Enrico Santini Montepergoli

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Superiore

    Mostly alcohol nose, but likeable - a là a good whiskey. Rustic and fiesty. Good body with tannins and rosewood. Stones and definite chew on the finish. Certainly has a vibe and a something to it.

Flight 8 - Petrolo (1 Note)

  • 2001 Fattoria Petrolo Galatrona

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    Fruity nose, flesh, but a slight furnace note. Very sharp in the nose as it is drunk. Over whelms rest. Return to it later - still the same. I swear this wine is oxidized.

    Second bottle, after wheedling with the rep, much cleaner and taut. Very crisp and agressive with nice fruit and toasty notes. Better stuff.

Flight 9 - La Massa (2 Notes)

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    Mineral nose that becomes serious and persistent sawdust. Grainy and dusty, raspberries and coffee powder. Some balsamic aromatics and a solid body. Elements are all there, but integration lacking. Time will tell.

  • 2001 La Massa Giorgio Primo

    Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    Plum, tobacco and cherry nose, but light and wafting. Nice fruit with some orange peel and tobacco. Lost middle though. Good finish emerges, very rolling in waves, frut and spice. Tea elements as well. Very solid and serious potential.

Flight 10 - Foradori (2 Notes)

And up to Alto Aldige.

  • 2002 Foradori Teroldego Rotaliano

    Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Trentino, Teroldego Rotaliano

    Little nose with some barley and tart cranberry fruit. Watery finish, more grain notes. Finish is a letdown for a pretty decent wine.

  • 2001 Foradori Granato

    Italy, Trentino Alto-Adige / Veneto, Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT

    Grappa nose. Tart fruit, nice earthy seams in it. Very graspy palate-feel. A bit out of balance with a short finish. Second try later - it was closed before, I can conclude. Much more mid-palate with wheat toast, slight floral, very nice.
