Introduction

Jason and Jill hosted a wonderful tasting. It was great to be able to spend some serious time with each flight. Thank you for having us.

Flight 1 - Served with Heirloom Tomato and Mozzarella Salad (1 Note)

I am a professed hater of raw tomatoes. I loved this, however. I may have to restate my position.

Flight 2 - Both of these flights could be called Great Bordeaux (3 Notes)

  • 1982 Château Léoville Las Cases 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

This was my second tasting of this wine, and I was disappointed. Both times it was served blind, but last time I rated it 99. This time it is a terrific wine but far more closed. I wonder if this needed more air. The nose was the highlight with tobacco, smoke, lead pencil and vanilla. The palate was earthy and very tannic. The fruit was really hiding.

  • 1986 Château Talbot 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Much more open. The nose showed tobacco and mint. While the nose wasn't up to the 82 LLC tonight, the palate was superior. It was thick and very ripe with plenty of structure to make it work. Sweet black fruits dominated but I also got lots of minerality. It also showed good length.

  • 1989 Château La Conseillante

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Very ripe nose with a distinct roasted element and a touch of VA. The palate was stewed and showed signs of being cooked. NR

Flight 3 - Great Bordeaux II (3 Notes)

Served with bloody rare Prime Rib. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. The meat was excellent

  • 1982 Château Gruaud Larose 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

The nose showed cedar and horse. With air the horse weakened but it never went away. The palate was thick and sweet but not terribly complex.

  • 1990 Château Léoville Poyferré 98 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Midway through this flight I turned to Eric and asked rhetorically, is this a perfect wine? There is not much more I could want from an aged Bordeaux. While I am sure this wine has years left, this bottle seemed to be ready to go. The nose showed some horse with rosemary and sweet fruit. More important than descriptors the nose showed great depth. It seemed to pull me into the glass. The palate picked up on the nose with great complexity. I would have loved to slowly enjoy this all night long. In addition to the depth, I loved the structure. While it had strong tannins, they were never intrusive. Wow.

  • 1986 Château Mouton Rothschild 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Once again LeVine brings a crappy wine. :) The nose showed leather and sweet black fruit. It, however, seemed to be hiding much more. The palate was very sweet and lush. I thought for sure that Jason had slipped in a California ringer. I felt a bit vindicated when later on Jason pointed out that Parker made a similar comment in his tasting note.

This wines is decades from being ready. It still shows the searing tannins of a barrel sample. This wine will outlive us all.
