Introduction

Visited a few wineries, including Palliser, Cabbage Tree, Margrain, Ata Rangi, Schubert. Bought several: two from Cabbage Tree, three from Margraine (all older Rieslings, last of the production), a few from Ata Rangi (including Kahu)... Tasting notes are few, and even those are skimpy. Had a Margraine Riesling a few days later, with comprehensive note.

    At winery. Sweet berry/cherry, roasted/toasted coffee/cacao, nice oak, moderate acidity, smooth/soft tannins, nice length and complexity. Yup, still my favourite Wairarapa Pinot. Bought two.

  • 2006 Palliser Estate Pinot Noir

    At winery. Earthy, minerally, smoky, highish level of firm/green tannins, stalky. Seemed to have been made with high percentage of unripe grapes.

  • 2008 Palliser Estate Noble Riesling

    At winery. Nice flavours and aromas, but unbalanced sugar:acidity (i.e., too sweet and not acidic enough), simple, lacking in length and complexity. Another one served too warm in the tasting room.

    At winery. Sharply acidic in a good way, high end of Brut sweetness, slightly green.

  • 1999 Margrain Riesling Proprietor's Selection 91 Points

    New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough

    Golden yellow. Very complex nose of petrol/kerosene, candle wax, jasmine flowers, honey, lime; intense and persistent. Slightly less intense on palate, + good minerality. Moderate acidity, 15-20 g/L RS, nice palate weight, long and complex. Still full of life and energy.
