Intensely perfumed red berry fruit, sweet and ripe with some spice in the fruit. Lush fresh palate, lots of fruit; real depth and ripeness here. Good length following a tannic mid palate. Warming sensation throughout. Lighter style, well made and drinking now.

2005 Domaine André Brunel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 89 Points

Perfumed brambly and spicy fruit, some earthy animal notes. Smooth, silky fruit on the palate, well balanced with ripe but tough tannins. Drinking well.

Sweet baked fruit aromas and slightly peppery. Chewy fruit, hot and tannic, this is a big wine though not got the structure for the long term.

2005 Clos du Mont-Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape 94 Points

Initially quite closed on the nose, but opened up with time to give animal and savoury notes and brooding black stewed fruits. Palate was very smooth on the initial attack. This wine is currently quite closed and brooding. Needs time to open up, but signs are very good indeed. Will be one for the long term.

2004 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape 90 Points

Bouquet of black fruits and violets, with vegetal and black pepper somewhere in the background. Chewy baked fruit palate, extremely tannic. Has the hallmarks of developing into a nice wine, but far too young right now.

2004 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau 92 Points

Magnum. Fresh, cedary and brambly fruit aromas, some vegetal nuances and a touch of marzipan. Tannins are quite soft, plenty of baked fleshy fruit and tremendous persistency. Well balanced and delicious.

1999 Domaine du Haut des Terres Blanches Châteauneuf-du-Pape 84 Points

Looking its age now, lots of browning throughout the glass. Nose is extremely vegetal, with compost heap aromas to the fore. Some floral and minerality too. Palate is nicely soft, just about enough fruit. Quite delicate but lacks any real depth through the finish. Certainly on its plateau and slightly disappointing.

1999 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 96 Points

Magnum. Beaucastel never fails to disappoint me. Just wish I could afford to buy a case each year! This one was tremendously complex. Notes of barnyard, savoury and stewed fruit, some spice and mixed fruit peel. Palate had a superb velvety feel to it, great acidity with black plummy fruit, plenty of tannin and super persistency. This is well balanced now, but could easily go another few years without disappointing. Bravo!
