Introduction

was actually presented by erin grace, but i had to work and got the schpiel from mr. sorano earlier in the day when the wines were just opened. some later notes apply to wines that i retained after a great set of nachos and water at elsa's because they refused to let the uncorked wines be tasted along side the nachos. ouch.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2007 Nikolaihof Grüner Veltliner "Hefeabzug"

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

    so "hefeabzug" means on the lees. Expressive salon nose with impressions of sweet fruit. Ben calls out the smell of gardening. doesn't quite finish like the nigl. shale mineral palate.

  • 2007 Nigl Grüner Veltliner Kremser Freiheit

    it is said that for a house style nigl go for mineral clarity. thought to be the best in kremstal. kremstal in general does not show the jazz exhibited by either wachau or kamptal.
    on the nose, minerality, lemon citrus, quite a bit of lift. touch of kerosene. white pepper. such dramatic minerality on the palate. spicy bite. tastes of lightning on the finish.

  • 2006 Weingut Willi Bründlmayer Grüner Veltliner Terrassen Kamptal

    much more fruit to the nose than the nigl or hefeabzug nikolaihof, but not so aromatic. kind of one dimentional. not so much fruit on the palate.

    this has now been open for the better part of 8 hours now.let it be known that when i pulled the cork it gave a blast of spritz (trademark of a good slide). nose is generalized as lemon minerality. some of that pasta flattening effect. the palate is characterized by these terms as well. good not great.

  • 2006 Weingut Hirsch Grüner Veltliner Reserve Lamm

    it is said that '06 was a distinctly riper and fatter vintage for the area.
    toasted popcorn expression on the nose. very aromatic. element of excitement!! roasted leesy palate. ben says "not dry" piquant acidity up front. spritzy. some beeswax tucked under the acid is a nice compliment.

  • 2007 Schloss Gobelsburg Grüner Veltliner Reserve Lamm

    finally some big fruit. pear. cotton candy. nice light white pepper. finishes of painters studio. drying oil paints. great ooh-so long finish. lemon, lime, pineapple. such amazing complexity.

  • 2006 Weingut Josef Högl Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Ried Schon-Viessling

    showing the most fruit so far. warm pineapple. ben calls out band aid palate. i say awesome sage finsih.
    open for the better part of eight hours at this point. rich pineapple and cotton candy. obvious lychee nose. such great floral and chalk notes on the palate. some peppery spice. this is the wine to enjoy on the last day of winter, anticipating the first day of spring. great not exceptional. i do want to buy a lot of this. $36
    an aside makes me think of wines showing huge fruit in a traditional style and the rigor at the sorting table. totally an aside, but slightly applicable. discuss.

  • 2006 Johann Donabaum Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Ried Spitzer Point

    first floral notes on the palate. not nearly expressive as the hogl. the finish drops off. floral and mineral tones.
