  • 2007 M. Chapoutier Condrieu Invitare

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu

    This was seemed pretty closed on opening, with a rather muted nose and palate. Better after and hour and still getting better at 3 hours. Some nice tropical fruit notes on the nose with a lovely light and delicate palate. Shame though that this bottle never really seemed to get going and give out the stone, fruit and flower qualities that Condrieu can at its best. I had high hopes for this but was ultimately disappointed. £25 from Majestic and not great value.

  • 1982 Baricci Brunello di Montalcino 91 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    This was good from opening and got a little better over the following 2 hours. Surprisingly youthful colour with a mid weight colour density. This was classic Sangiovese all the way. Notes of cherry and plum with a touch of mahogany on the nose. Lovely olivey, savoury finish. Interestingly the palate had a very fine powdery quality too that added to its savouriness and complexity.

  • 1990 Luis Pato João Pato Vinho de Mesa 88 Points

    Portugal

    75% Baga, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. Double decanted for sediment and to help blow off the funky/rubbery nose on opening. Obviously mature colour, and medium light in colour density. The nose has an interesting slightly baked nose with gentle aromas of old fruit. The palate is lovely and light with a slight sweetness, but that actually has quite a dry finish. Overlall not unlike a mature but slightly rustic southern Rhone blend, but with a twist. Delicious and popular with friends, this holds up well, and isonly showed up for its rusticity and simplicity by the superior and much more elevated 1982 Brunello this evening. A bargain at £2.50 for a half.

  • 1994 Château Bouscassé Madiran Vieilles Vignes 91 Points

    France, Southwest France, Madiran

    This was like I would imagine a 1986 left bank Bordeaux might taste like if I had ever had one. Pretty dark colour - not much ageing at all. This opened out more and more as the evening wore on. Dried blood, iron, leather, almost meaty notes on the nose. The palate is still crunchy with tannins, but there's a good dollop of acidity too. Not exactly fruity, nor in any way dried out. There's a slightly wildness to this too - not controlled like a claret is. No hurry to drink this. I enjoyed this a lot.
