Tasting Group Dinner - Burgs

Introduction

Craig Vanderah, Dave Dalluge, Chris Larson, and I met at Heidi's for a weeknight offline with Burgundy as the theme. The evening unexpectedly turned into a progressive dinner after the Heidi's kitchen had to close midway through service (darn those fire suppression systems!). It was a fun and memorable evening with good friends, food, and conversation.

Flight 1 - Heidi's (4 Notes)

  • 2007 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 96 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    Tight, but still explosive nose of lemon, mineral, and grapefruit. Much less closed on the palate than I expected. Marvelous tension. Bright, long, zingy, salty, and amazingly complex and pure. Pungent minerality. Waves of electric fruit. One of the best Chablis I've had, and my WOTN. Thanks to Craig for sharing this amazing bottle.

  • NV Chartogne-Taillet Champagne Cuvée Sainte Anne 89 Points

    Disgorged April 08. Doughy baked apple pie/cinnamon flavors. Lightly oxidative. Nice mousse. A bit yeasty and heavy.

  • 2002 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 88 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

    Slightly pale cherry red color. Fragrant nose. Light- to medium bodied, with herb-tinged cherry fruit and iron. Quite delicate; would be outstanding if it had a touch more flesh and fruit.

  • 2003 Gérard Raphet Clos de la Roche 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

    Deep maroon/black color. Expressive, deeply pitched black fruit on the nose. The palate shows sweet dark fruit, licorice, and spice, and is full bodied, long and thick. This is ripe and a touch New World in character, yet still undeniably speaks of Clos de la Roche.

Flight 2 - La Belle Vie (3 Notes)

  • 1996 Domaine Arlaud Clos de la Roche Cuvée Unique 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

    Earthy, spicy, complex red fruit on the nose and palate. With air, picked up some interesting secondary flavors including leafy tobacco and funk/animal. Well balanced. Long finish. Delicious.

  • 2002 Domaine Arlaud Clos de la Roche 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

    Third time I've tasted this. Darker fruit than the '96, tasted side-by-side (see TN). Some new oak, sappy dark fruit, coffee, meat, and lots of iron. This is still a bit primal in comparison with the '96, but seems like the (slightly) better wine of the two.

  • 1990 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Cèdres 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Tasted blind. I guessed '03 Burg, and was proven wrong again. Very dark color. Dark fruit, freshly chopped herbs, black licorice, and a faint whiff of VA. Really big, ripe, young, and funky, with resolved tannins. Interesting and very tasty.
