Huge thanks to all for a wonderfull evening and to Jay C for organizing this and finding a great restaurant. Once again - the generocity of this board is astounding. It was great to see Doug, Fernando, Jay, Victor and David again and a pleasure to meet Bill.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 1977 Bodega Weinert Malbec Estrella 97 Points

    Argentina, Mendoza

this lives up to its legendary status - its as good as one can ask for. its full caramel and sweet spices. light and etherial wine - no angles although still some muscle. obviously fully mature wine - with some orage on the rim but not at all "dying". The closest comparable wine is old rioja - but this malbec spoke - and it said ARGENTINA. It had it all. this is delicious - Fernando - this is trully a treat. Forget about food - it will work , but drink this on its own - it needs no help from anything else :)

  • 1997 Cordero di Montezemolo Barolo Monfalletto 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

took about 2 hours to open - but when it did! tons of beautifull cherry fruit - huge wine with lots of power that will age effortlessly. yum! i would not open another for 5 years at least. This is something i will look for.

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

i had the squab for appt. it was smoaked and then roasted and served over salad... YUM!

  • 1996 Domaine Dujac Morey-Saint-Denis 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey-Saint-Denis

amazing nose but still rather closed on the palatte. very well balanced wine that needs more time. became much better with an hour in the glass. a classy burgundy that should fill out in few years and merit a much higher score. Yum!

  • 1998 Cims de Porrera Priorat Classic 94 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

this is just great. Powerfull and rich without any "over-ripeness" great backbone and balance. This is Spain - with its dusty nose and vibrant acidity . the powerfull tannins are matched well by the fruit and the acid to form a delisious wine. This i could drink all day

  • 2001 Bodega Benegas Finca Libertad 90 Points

    Argentina, Mendoza

liked this - it had a very good structure and nice fruit. the hollowness on midpallate was there in the begining but it filled in with time. yet there was not enough "Argentina" in this wine. a well made wine though with serious black fruit. Needs more time to integrate.

  • 1982 Château Montrose

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

slightly corked. still gracefull and well structured but some of the fruit was missing... and it was musty.

  • 1999 Pride Mountain Vineyards Merlot 91 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Napa / Sonoma

i guess there is a reason i have no Pride this was just not my cup of tea. Lush fruit and lots of it. but too big and fat for me and not enough structure. It was technically a nice wine though and merits the score of 92 - but i would never buy it.

  • NV Lopez Hermanos Málaga Don Salvador 96 Points

    Spain, Andalucía, Málaga

hate to toot my own horn but i really loved this. very complex nose - and less sweet than the PX ones thus a bit better balanced. I liked the high acidity - to me it felt refreshing. i cant wait to go to Malaga and grab some more of these... delicious. tofee, caramel, nuts... finish just goes on and on. one of the best sherry style wines i've ever had.
