A Sampling Of Burgundy

Introduction

Five flights, three wines per flight. We started with the Roederer Sparkling and finished with a sweet Riesling.

Flight 1 - Apertif (1 Note)

Flight 2 - Simpler, young white Burgs. (3 Notes)

  • 2005 Maison Albert Bichot Chablis 1er Cru Les Vaucopins Domaine Long-Depaquit 85 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

    Pale pale yellow color. Grassy, green apple nose with a touch of potato starchiness. Not impressed on the palate -- thin. Nutty and a touch fruity with green apple and some Sauvignon Blanc notes. Finishes a tad short with a touch of sweetness. Truth is that I'm not a real Chablis fan but this is good, and will pair well with summer fare.

  • 2006 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Combes Blanc 88 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru

    Good complexity here. Dark golden color. Nutty oak with brown sugar ad a bit of artificial chemical notes, which eventually gave way to tropical fruity and a musky note. There is good acidity here, which is a sure sign that this will last for several years. Palate is loaded with good toasted brown sugar, tropical fruit and cream. Some green apple emerges on a very solid medium to long finish. This is a very nice effort that should drink well for 3-5 years.

  • 2005 Nicolas Potel Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières 87 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

    PVery pale color. Nearly colorless. Great nose of honeydew and other ripe melons, minor oak, green apple and nice fruit. Palate a step down from the dynamic nose with brown sugar, oak and good fruit. Not a particularly long finish but it builds with time. Good and simple but I truthfully expected a bit more from this.

  • 1993 Dominique Laurent Pommard 1er Cru Les Charmots 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

    Really showing well right now. Drink 'em if you got 'em. Dynamic nose of mushroom, tar, dirt and salt marsh. Really great nose. Earthy but really nice. Palate a little short after that nose. Dirt, strawberry and red fruit. Slightly thin but it builds to a wonderful finish. This is a really great value.

  • 1993 Joseph Drouhin Chambertin 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

    Still very young. This has a long way to go. Fruity and acidic on the nose with raspberry and cranberry. This was incredibly young but very complex. Bright red and blue fruit. Medium finish, which was a little disappointing. Fresh and delicious now and will only get better. Try again in 10 years?

  • 1993 Joseph Drouhin Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru 87 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

    Nice red color. Bright fruit nose with raspberry and cranberry. A little pepper with cranberry and root beer. Nice complexity on palate with a touch of well integrated oak. Nothing particularly special about finish. Still young and should develop over time. Good wine that lacks complexity and a finish but should reward a few more years of patience.

Flight 5 - Younger Nuits Reds (3 Notes)

  • 2002 Bouchard Père et Fils Echezeaux 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

    Bright red color. Red and blue cherry, very young and fresh with miles to go on this. Touch of oak and cream. Palate ripe with cherry cola and an excellent finish. This very young an has a ways to go. WOTN?

  • 2003 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Domaine Louis Jadot 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

    Bright red with purple. Nice sweet spicy nose, pepper nose. There are good vegetal notes here as well. Cola, root beer and bell peppers. This is very nice but a tad short on the palate -- maybe slightly thinner than I expected. Nice and smooth on the palate but it lacks complexity. Good long finish. This is in a tough spot right now and is tannic with a long future ahead of it. It may be closed.

  • 2004 Domaine Leroy Nuits-Saint-Georges 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges

    Browning around the edges. Oaky with root beer note. Dark fruit framed well by oak. Super nose of mushrooms, earth and dirt. Very solid on the palate with a nice combination of minerals and complex fruits. A good lengthy finish. I thoroughly enjoyed this as it had nice complexity. It has a lot of class and should do well with time. However, it definitely was the most controversial wine of the night and was ranked across the spectrum.

Flight 6 - 05 Beaune Reds (3 Notes)

  • 2005 Domaine Lafouge Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru La Chapelle Rouge 87 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru

    Bright red and fruity. Touch of oak and raspberry. Palate of minerals combined with minerals and earth. This could use some more time to develop but I doubt it will ever hit 90. Probably an 89 at best. Very nice Auxey-Duresses.

  • 2005 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Grèves Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus 93 Points

    Showing very well right now. Possible WOTN. Deep red color. Sweet spice, red and blue fruit, cherries and pepper all framed well in oak. The oak was not at all overpowering and seems well integrated already. Very nice on the palate with a pleasurable blend of sweet and spice. Great tannic structure and a long finish. This outshined the 05 Bouchard Le Corton, which were tasted side by side in the final flight of the night. The Le Corton may be shut down right and may show better in 10-15 years. But right now, on this night, this was the better wine.

  • 2005 Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Le Corton 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

    Not going to say "disappointing" because it is a very nice wine. Tasted right after the Enfant Jesus. Deep red color. Sweet spice, earthy with cherry and minerals on the nose, but austere, as if it was holding something back. Good complex fruit on the palate though it definitely was a bit watery and lacked something on the mid-palate. The tannic structure was more pronounced in the Enfant Jesus and to me, suggests that the Enfant Jesus may be a longer haul wine than this. However, this may be shut down right and is holding something back.
