Flight 1 - Red (4 Notes)

  • 1998 Penfolds Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 407 90 Points

    Australia, South Australia

    Color light red, mature. Cherry nose. Not Aussie? French like. Big face punch of flavours, full exploding palate, but a bit dry on the finish, but a very nice wine. Maybe the oak was heavier in it's early days and is a bit drying nowW Age has done this simple wine well. John is a hero.

  • 2005 Elderton Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz/Merlot Ode to Lorraine 90 Points

    Nice deep color. Vanilla & oak. Light cherry, not too bad. Blend? Young. Not beefy (the descriptor of the night), very round. Long, lingering, big & fat, and young.

    Dark. Closed on the nose & palate, needs much more decant time? Mature, but big acid. Aussie, kinda thin on the palte, but flavors are nice as she opens up.

    Still a bit disappointing once the cover came off.

  • 2001 Torbreck Shiraz The Struie 93 Points

    Black. Wicked nose, complicated. Claen, crisp, big fruit, licorice, mounds of cherries pulled though vanilla ice cream stuffed dirty socks. Sweet. Beef blood. Liquid chocolate cake, damnnnnnnn. Only downside, was it did not finish as deep as you hoped. The flavors as you can tell were killer, just wished that extended beyond the front & mid palate and initial back pop.

    A few more years on this and I expect it to get deeper as she opens up. Note to self. Buy more Torbreck.

Flight 2 - Dessert Wine (1 Note)

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

    Pop & pour for a little party tomorrow night. Just a taste. Thief'd a small glass and re vacuumed, will decant and re-bottle in the morning.

    Just about a burnt light red color, translucent. Mature port. Ahhh all good here, a peak at what tomorrow will bring. Nose has raisin, layers of spice already there. Great nose. Mouth coat and feels as others note, just great . . . fills the palate.The lingering fruit totally different from the raisin attack on the front & mid palate. Dried and roasted, or a dark roasted coffee and figs touch of prunes, really intense. While it lingers is not a hugely deep wine, perhaps the force of youth as giving way to a more subtle wine.
