A Few 2005 Cote de Beaune Reds

• 2005 Domaine Pavelot (Jean-Marc et Hugues) Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Peuillets

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru

  Medium to light colored. Brambly and blackberry aromas-very Savigny. Medium to light weight, sharp acidity, not much fruit. OK but unimpressive.

• 2005 Maurice Écard Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Jarrons

  Slightly darker than the Pavelot but still limpid. While still lighter weight, more fragrant than that wine with both better, rounder black fruit and some licorice. I prefer this although do not feel compelled to buy.

  Medium color. Blackberry, acid, tannin profile with good finish. Similar to the Pavelot Savigny and also nothing special.

• 2005 Domaine Henri Boillot Volnay 1er Cru Les Fremiets

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

  Youthful dark color. Some wood stands out on the nose. Char and black fruit flavors with some subtle sweetness, sap, and good length. OK but could use more definition-it seems pretty soupy for a Volnay.

• 2005 Domaine Louis Boillot et Fils Volnay 1er Cru Les Brouillards

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

  Deep center but lighter than the Henri Boillot. Subtle black fruit nose. Unlike the other wine, this is finely chiseled with fresh acidity, airiness, and beautiful expansion in the mouth. Tannic finish. A lovely Volnay and the wine of the tasting for me.

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

  Medium to light colored. Brambly camphor aromas. All black fruit, lean but not brutal with refined tannins.

• 2005 Domaine Louis Boillot et Fils Pommard 1er Cru Les Croix Noires

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

  Classic youthful medium color and saturation. Tannic, boot black nose. Less generous and more structured than the Parent. Meager fruit and too harsh and tannic. Remarkably less attractive than the Volnay I tried from this producer today.

Uninspiring flight with the exception of the Louis Boillot Volnay. One can always hedge and apologize for the wines being at a bad stage for tasting, but I wonderwhether some of these will have enough flesh to overcome the structure over the long haul. The black fruit character of the wines was striking-no strawberry or raspberry to be found in this group!
