Introduction

A very large tasting of 19 different Zins. A range of $8.99 to 37.99 Zins. The highlights were the 07 Brown "Estate", 05 Saxon-Brown "Casa Santamaria" & 07 Sandler "Buck Hill." For the under $20 the 07 Edmeades "Mendocino" and 07 Macchia "Oblivious" were tasty as well. Wines in order of tasting. I also feel like a lot of the 07 were still too young or need a good decant.

Flight 1 (19 Notes)

  • 2007 Cline Cellars Zinfandel California 84 Points

    USA, California

A very drink now wine- young ripe red fruit with some black on the finish. A decent wine for under $10.

  • 2007 Cline Cellars Zinfandel Ancient Vines 84 Points

    USA, California

Wine was still a little green and earthy. Less fruit in this vs. the other Cline. There was a little more spice.

  • 2007 C.G. di Arie Zinfandel Amador County 85 Points

USA, California, Sierra Foothills, Amador County

The fault in this wine was the heat and acid- not in check in this wine. Good fruit and spice though. Pass on this wine for now, but with some age and/or a decant this could improve.

  • 2007 Edmeades Winery Zinfandel Mendocino County 86 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County

This is a good daily drinker Zin. Great fruit- but lacking a little spice/pepper. Good amount of acid and heat- very in check compared to the Arie.

  • 2006 Christian Lazo Zinfandel 86 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

The initial response from both Clarissa and I was "WOW." Very over extracted fruit- almost late harvest. Very hard to score as I don't know the winemakers intentions. High Alc. and strong jammy fruits- very pie like. This is a good drink along or with desert wine- way to in your face for food. WineX workers said the fruit was from the Sauret vineyard. Was the only Paso wine and a bad example of Paso for me. Good for what it is...

  • 2007 Macchia Zinfandel Oblivious Old Vine 88 Points

    USA, California, Central Valley, Lodi

For under $20 Macchia is a great producer of Zins. Good black fruits with some spices. Still like the Mischievious a little better- but this was very good as well.

  • 2007 Buehler Vineyards Zinfandel 83 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

I would agree with the previous reviewer- past vintages were a lot better. Way too green and earthy. Was a little better with food, but hard to tell if this will get better. Pass for now.

  • 2006 Frank Family Vineyards Zinfandel 86 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Great nose that didn't follow through on the taste. Wine is jumbled and mixed up right now. The Alc. was strong in this wine as well. Girlfriend liked it more than I did.

  • 2007 Brown Estate Zinfandel Napa Valley 89 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Not a wowing Zin- just good. Everything in check- fruit, spice, acid and alc. Nothing pushes this wine to a great level. Very easy drinking.

  • 2005 Franz Hill Vineyards Zinfandel Franz Hill 87 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

At $38- there are tons of better Zins- or you could buy two of other equal/better Zins. A hot wine with some acid. Strong berry fruit- but nothing else. Reminded me of an Opollo wine. This is not a bad wine- just priced badly.

  • 2007 Bucklin Bambino Field Blend Old Hill Ranch 83 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley

Least favorite of the tasting. Everything was off on this one... too much acid and very green and earthy still. Maybe some air/time would help. Don't know. But, this was the only wine I dumped.

  • 2007 Sandler Wine Company Zinfandel Buck Hill Vineyard 90 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County

Suprise wine of the tasting and was very happy with this one. Never heard of Sandler- WineX workers said he is know for Pinots. Both of the Sandlers with very light in color and taste. However, this Sandler was night and day better. Very tasty wine- blackfruit. Very easy drinking and well priced at $29 IMHO. Once I drink down some wine in my cellar I will for sure buy this one.

  • 2005 Saxon-Brown Zinfandel Casa Santinamaria Vineyards 91 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley

WOTN- very good Zin. Was Clarissa and my favorite Zin being poured. Black berry fruit. Again another wine I'll purchase in the very near future. This wine would be awesome with or without food.

  • 2007 Seghesio Family Vineyards Zinfandel Home Ranch 88 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley

Very sweet jammy nose. Taste was more spice and less fruit compared to the Seghesio Rockpile. Good amounts of acid and alc. Good food wine.

  • 2006 Sandler Wine Company Zinfandel Dry Creek Valley 85 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley

Very very light Zin- almost Rose in color, no joke- I have never seen a Zin this light and clear. This taste nothing like a Dry Creek Zin... too light and soft for a Zin. Would pass and have a hard time recommending. I don't think it is a bad wine- just made in a complete different style. Like another reviewer stated "A pinot lovers Zin."
