Flight 1 - Thematic Tasting of Bord 01 (15 Notes)
In general, I find the 01s quite good with many striking a good balance between ripe fruits, alc, fresh acidity and tannins (which I find to be softer than the 05s but firmer than the 03s). An enjoyable vintage, this feels like a little brother to the 05s.
2001 Château La Dominique 81 Points
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru
Oaky, dry smoke and asparagus. Inkish, infused sweet berries with some spice. Quite rounded smooth dense fruits.

Pungence of undergrowth, wild berries atop some wild mushrooms framed by coffee notes. Lovely sultry cherry berry fruits with some spice lifted nicely by acidity. Good balance and fruits.

Sweet seductive nose of ripe fruits and purple flowers. Monolithic inkish palate of sour berries and red dates. Not bad but not impressive enough.

Smelly ass! Small calf, compote of berries and wet leather. Lovely balan ces with soup stewy characteristics. Cherries and berries stewed to a dainty expression of finesse and depth. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Loamy, foamy, masculine and leathery with sprinkle of nutmeg. Ripe polished fruits but has good balance of acidity and light tannins.

Smelly ass and perfumed dark indian flowers but the nose goes off too quickly. Frontal assault of half ripe berries. Grippy acidity. Lively.

Lifted pepper and perfumed smoked leather. Just a squeeze of capsicum and some pencil shavings. Ripe but grippy acidity, very lively with almost grapefruit like acidity. Unfortunately , it is not paillac enough being so fresh and doesn't have enough green capsicums as previous pontets tasted.

2001 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 80 Points

Wet dog fur,hints of coffee oak and lifted notes of violets. Relatively muted though. On the palate, this is singular expression of juicy light berries. Maybe it is too closed up but I find it too simple though elegant but rather uninspiring. A pity.

Exotic nose of leather, cat's pee, some fishyness. Exotic on the palate as well with spices, succulent fruits and some bitter root on the finish. A bit underwhelming compared to another bottle of the same vintage that I had but maybe I was ex[ected tp be blown away again. To be fair , this bottle was tasted straight out fromt he bottle withouth much decanting.

Great pauillac typicity on the nose. Green peppers, slices of dried up leather, pencil shavings and some smoky fruit. Enticing mid palate of plummish zingy fruit. Powdery tannins.

Flowers! , five spice powder with a bit of animalistic notes. Very good finesse and elegance. This is classy and shows noble breeding. Orange peelish, plummmish berry fruits that has interesting wild perfumes in the mouth.

A very different nose from the whole bunch of wines at the tasting. This is leafy, walk in the fern grove, an air of freshness, minty and curry spice. Inkish, some apple and orange skins. Although this is a neutral wine with a bit of everything but nothing to cause an extreme flow of emotions. I am neither falling head over heels over it nor hating it. This is that respectable guy in the class that everyone knows but won't think of straightaway when drawing up the party list. Fine tannins. Lively and lithey.
