Introduction

Part of the 2009 World Gourmet summit, many distributors were present to showcase about 39 Chianti Classico. Very good for expanding my palate.

  • 2004 Agricoltori del Geografico Chianti Classico Riserva Tenuta Montegiachi

    Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    Nose: Classic Chianti nose with a little dustiness and meatiness to it.
    Taste: Delicious dark fruit, giving it a good body weight and good structure.

  • 2005 Agricoltori del Geografico Chianti Classico Lucignano

    Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    Nose: Aside from the brick and fruit nose, there was a great underlying freshly cut tomato
    Taste: Well made, textbook Chianti Classico but nothing super spectacular.

  • 2001 Barone Ricasoli Chianti Classico Castello di Brolio

    Nose: A little vegetal on the nose alongside dark cherries and rustic earthiness
    Taste: The first thing was it's viscosity and it still had a lot of structure left in this wine. Requires more breathing but elegant.

  • 2001 Barone Ricasoli Chianti Classico Riserva Rocca Guicciarda

    Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    Nose: Had more of an 'eggy' sulphrous nose which blew off after a couple of swirls to show good fruit on the nose, standard Chianti Classico nose
    Taste: A little disjointed. Backend fruit and a little more minerals on this one than most Chianti Classicos. Not one of my favourite.

  • 2007 Borgo Salcetino Chianti Classico

    Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    Nose: Fruit dominated with fresh cherries but not over the top
    Taste: The fruit carries onto the palate. Not fake fruit, but real delicious fruit. One of the more fruit forward Chianti Classicos I have come across. A good transition wine for New World drinkers to crossover.

  • 2005 Borgo Salcetino Chianti Classico Lucarello Riserva

    Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    Nose: 'Eggy' sulphurous component on the nose which goes away after a while leaving some dusty brick and fruit. Quite standard and classic.
    Taste: Big but well structured tannins. Delivers a well balanced Chianti Classico with nice cherries .

  • 2005 Capannelle Chianti Classico Riserva

    Nose: Thick and robust nose. Beautiful greens and basil notes on the nose, mixed in with fruit. One of my favourite noses of the event
    Taste:Elegant and delicious sweet cherries (not fake ones) on the midpalate which lingers to the end. Nice and complex with earth tones.

  • 2007 Castelli del Grevepesa Chianti Classico Clemente VII

    Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    Nose: Big and thick nose with some obvious sulphur dioxide. Bordering slightly on austere.
    Taste: Very elegant on the palate. Thick delicious cherries and fruit but very well integrated with some earthiness and tobacco. It's neither fruit nor earth forward, but strikes a very clean balance in between.

  • 2006 Castelli del Grevepesa Chianti Classico Clemente VII Riserva

    Nose: Aside from classic Chianti Classico noses, this had a very nice light chocolate nose coating the fruit and earth.
    Taste: Candied cherries and berries with a menthol finish. Could have used a little more earthiness in my opinion.

  • 2005 Castello di Ama Chianti Classico

    Nose: One of the more interesting noses I came across for the event. Bricks, clayey soil, hints of sulphur and a dash of vegetal greeness. Yet surprisingly pleasant.
    Taste: Great backbone and structure with enough tannins to last for several more years. Suprisingly a good blend of slightly jammy fruit with pepper and greeness.

  • 2006 Marchesi Mazzei Chianti Classico Castello di Fonterutoli

    Nose: Definitely of a lighter nose that most. Light cherries and dustiness
    Taste: Blackpepper with and elegant balance of fruit. Could have used a little more structure and body.

  • 2003 Marchesi Mazzei Chianti Classico Castello di Fonterutoli

    Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    Nose: A nose of dark fruit and bricks. For a wine with 10% Cab, you can definitely recognize a little bit of that cab on the nose. Definitely a more friendly and familiar nose for people who want to start on Chianti.
    Taste: Drinks like an old world cab with an Italian flavour of dustiness and good earth tones. If you want to drink a classic Chianti Classico, this is not one.

    Nose: Balanced brick, 'eggy' sulphur and fruit
    Taste: Pleasant fruit and well balanced. Basic but well made. Textbook.

  • 2003 Castello di Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio

    Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    My favourite wine of the event

    Nose: Ridiculously elegant, beautiful and complex nose of earth, soil, slight underlying oak and lovely greens. There's probably more to this complex nose but I couldn't get them all.
    Taste: Delicious but not over the top jamminess and cherries. Added with complexities of earth notes and other indescribables.

  • 2006 Castello di Querceto / Querceto Chianti Classico

    Nose: Classic nose with a slight mellow citrus peel (not the fruit itself, just the inside for the peel).
    Taste: Pretty textbook Chianti Classico with a jammy front and dusty earthiness at the backend.

  • 2004 Castello di Querceto / Querceto Chianti Classico Riserva

    Nose: Elegant nose of cherries and bricks
    Taste: Big tannin structure which would benefit from more aging or breathing. There is an element of minerality and dried herbs to it under the fruit.

  • 2006 Castello di Selvole Chianti Classico

    Nose: Big tannin structure, slightly jammy and tomatos; felt a little bit over-extracted
    Taste: Bright juicy cherries with a very slight vegetal tones but the mid-palate was a little hollow for me.

    Nose: A typical Chianti nose with a mandarin peel.
    Taste: Herbal notes along with some balanced fruit. A little lack of charisma.

  • 2006 Fattoria Nittardi Chianti Classico Casanuova di Nittardi

    Nose: Consistent with previous reviewer. Had some dustiness and elegant earthiness along with lovely greeness.
    Taste: Fruit is backed up by a floral fragrance and a meatiness to it. Rather interesting.

  • 2005 Fattoria Nittardi Chianti Classico Riserva

    Popped & Poured
    Nose: Big intense nose of savoury meatiness along with well balanced dark cherries
    Taste: Smooth and elegant with delicious cherries and upfront fruit. For me it was a little one-dimensional. But probably because it was a P&P, it would benefit more from breathing.

  • 2005 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico

    Of all the wines of the event, this was one of those that didn't stand out. It wasn't bad by any measure, but it was a little boring. Very standard decently well made Chianti Classico.
    It had the standard cherry, bricks, dusty nose with the rustic old world fruit and earth on the palate.

  • 2006 Fontodi Chianti Classico

    Popped & Poured
    Nose: Cherries with a great tangerine peel thing going on. Some coffee at the tail end
    Taste: Quite New World for me. Incredibly juicy fruit, but not over the top. Would benefit more from some breathing.

  • 2004 Fontodi Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna del Sorbo

    Nose: Detectable but well integrated oak along with dark cherries and earth tones. Classic yet elegant in a modern way
    Taste: Still quite young, but great structure in the tannins. Pepper notes along with the fruit and herbs. This would benefit from some decanting because it's still a little tight.

    Taste: Very friendly on the palate with great fruit, structure and balance but nothing too complex.

  • 2003 Il Molino di Grace Chianti Classico Riserva

    Nose: Classy nose of smoke, pronouced brick notes and fruit.
    Taste: Great tannin structure that can keep for a while longer. Palate friendly and a little more modern in its approach. Delicious fruit with good complexity.

    Taste: Standard textbook Chianti but finishes a little thin.

  • 2004 Fattoria Le Fonti Chianti Classico Riserva

    Nose: Great classic Chianti nose with some coffee and mocha as well
    Taste: Great mouthfeel, again the classic flavours come into play along with some slight minerality and well integrated oak. My only gripe was that it was a slight heat at the backend.

    Nose: Elegant and classic Chianti Classico nose but with more pronounced cream.
    Taste: Big structued tannins that could last for several more years. A well made Chianti with more earth forward tones.

    Nose: Thick, intense, rustic nose of dirt and sour cherries. Great nose.
    Taste: A lighter styled Chianti Classico. Easy drinking, nothing too complex.

  • 2001 Vignamaggio Chianti Classico Riserva Castello di Monna Lisa

    Nose: Great dark fruit on the nose. Complex with a slight citrus peel and some smoke
    Taste: Big structure but very delicious bright cherries, pepper and simply delicious overall

Closing

A large number of the wines still had lots of years left in them. Most of them had classic Chianti notes but only a couple really stood out. Like the Monsanto, San Felice and the Le Fonti.
