93rd Rezek Dinner

Introduction

Another nice annual Rezek dinner. This one perhaps a bit more casual and loose than diners past - fine by me! The food was surprisingly good compared with my past experiences at Kendall - scallops were exceptional.

Theme was 'forgotten wines' that you are interested in trying so, again, loose. Turned out to be a nice diverse lineup.

We started with a duck consomme and a sherry (per tradition) after the champagne and then moved on from there.

Flight 1 - Welcome (1 Note)

Flight 2 - Scallops with morels, fava beans, and thyme beurre blanc (1 Note)

  • 1999 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Lovely lanolin and fruit fruit on the nose with hints of lemon. Lanolin and fruit carry through on the palate with a typical Northern Rhone priclkly spiciness. Probably still at the tail end of that awkward stage that all these wines seem to go through, but should be coming around soon. Rounded out nicely with the scallops.

Flight 3 - Grilled Ribeye with bone marrow polenta, braised parsnips, and red wine jus (4 Notes)

  • 1959 Château Trimoulet 88 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

A nice old dame, but probably lacked the stuffing and gravitas to live this long. Bricking crimson color. Medium slightly sour red fruit nose. A bit thin on the midpalate and acidic on the finish, though there was still some fruit there as well. Some raisin notes.

  • 1970 Château Latour Grand Vin 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Full ruby crimson color. Wonderful nose of cedar briar red fruit. Mmnn, lovely bright red fruit with spice and cedar carrying through on the palate. Always fun to drink a mature wine of this pedigree. Would have easily been WOTN except that one of the three bottles served was off so the votes were skewed. 94+ pts.

  • 1972 Mayacamas Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Mountain 90 Points

    USA, California

Dard red core with plenty of brightening. Brifght red sweet tart raisin nose. Nice round red fruit but perhaps a bit simple? This turned out to be the official WOTN but I can't see how. I had it a distant third. Definitely fun to get to try though.

  • 1991 Henschke Shiraz Hill of Grace 94 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley

Best showing yet for this wine, maybe it did just need more time! Full ruby red color. Lovely bright spicy eucalyptus nose. Wow, lovely rich ripe eucalyptus spice red fruit in the palate. A different animal than the Latour and others, but drinking very nicely. 94-95 pts.

Closing

Finished with cheeses, dessert, and another sherry that I did not bother with a note on.
