Introduction

Supposedly simple affair but with a pleasant suprise.

Flight 1 - The Soleils (2 Notes)

As much as how the speaker was saying that the wine making team had worked at Canon La Gaffeliere and La Mondotte before... I wonder in what aspect as I find little similarities between them. Very much modern in style despite all the talk about letting nature do its work (which by the way is an overused gimmick). Not that they are bad but just not very competitively priced at a price where I could probably get a more robust and complex new world cabernet merlot blend.

  • 2005 Château Soleil 80 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Puisseguin Saint-Émilion

    Ripe raspberries, blue berries and mostly rounded fruits. Sappy mouthfeel with very plummish black sour plums. Pretty modernistic showing extract.

  • 2005 Château Soleil Promesse 78 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Puisseguin Saint-Émilion

    Smoky with mainly blackcurrants. Relatively big currant fruits supported by gentle acidity and decent chewy tannins. Finishes with a certain tangy limeyness.

Flight 2 - The Suprise! (1 Note)

A little unfair to Soleil to have this served side by side. Although both are of different regions and varietals, the contrast in quality and depth is pretty clear.

  • 1994 M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon 86 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

    Light floral perfumes followed closely by whiffs of gunpowder smoke , brambly blueberries, dried meated lifted by cedar oak. Spice-driven gentle and feminine expression of red currant fruits. Attractive, juicy with a lingering licourice-tainted cherries rounded up by sour plummishness.
