Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2007 Baron Philippe de Rothschild Cabernet Sauvignon Vin de Pays d'Oc 80 Points

    France, Languedoc Roussillon, Vin de Pays d'Oc

    Decanted for an hour, tasted double-blind. A rather dark red all the way to the rim, not much violet in the colour. The nose is quite expressive, with cassis and a bit of vanillary sweetness, as well as a slight citrusy smell. Not very exciting. On the palate, also cassis, a bit of sweetness and some tannins. This is an easy drinker, not much going on here, but nothing bad about it. Could be a good party wine, cheap and not noteworthy. 50+3+9+12+6=

  • 2007 Bodegas Castillo Viejo Cabernet Sauvignon 84 Points

    Uruguay, San Jose

    Decanted for an hour tasted double-blind. A garnet red to the edge, not much violet in the colour. On the nose a bit of red cherries, herbs and even garrigue. On the palate there are quite a bit of tannins, red fruit, a nice bitter and earthy taste to it. A nice wine and I was quite sure it was a Syrah from the Rhone, I was rather surprised that it was a Cab Sauv from Uruguay, compared to the other wine tasted simultaneously, there were no Cab Sauv characteristics here. 50+3+11+14+6=84
