  Nose: Kerosene, citrus, perfume, melon, bitter
  Mouth: Tart, Acidic, some stone fruit, oily, bit short on the finish.

• 2008 Jules Côtes de Provence Rosé 77 Points

  France, Provence, Côtes de Provence

  Nose: initially patchouli, then sugared red berries, particularly strawberries - actually those soft strawberry shrimp sweets I used to get as a child. Also some very light smokiness
  Mouth: Very small (strawberry shrimp) attack, no middle, no finish, perhaps some rhubarb. Tastes almost watered down.
  12.5% £6.99. No thank you.

• 2008 Azienda Giribaldi in Rodello Gavi 85 Points

  Italy, Piedmont, Gavi

  Nose: Stone fruit, floral - perhaps even elderflower
  Mouth: Pétillant, ginger bread, almost chalky minerality, some apricot/melon, balanced acidity.
  12% £9.99. Favourite white for me of the evening.

• 2007 Domaine Laurent Gauthier Morgon 83 Points

  France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon

  Nose: raspberry, red and black cherry, bonfires and autumnal leaves
  Mouth: bit of cherry, some tannic grip but not too much.
  12.5% £11.99. Bit flabby, the nose is far better than the mouth. Nah.

• 2007 Porcupine Ridge Syrah 85 Points

  South Africa, Coastal Region

  Nose: Smoked bacon, blackberry, cinnamon, licorice, blackcurrant, meaty yeasty overtones
  Mouth: Tannic but nicely balanced. Vanilla, toffee, blackberry.
  14.5% £9.99. Beast of a wine to finish the evening. Quite nice and balanced.

• 2008 Viña Cono Sur Sauvignon Blanc 85 Points

  Chile, Central Valley

  Nose: Green pepper, touches of asparagus, nettles, freshly cut grass
  Mouth: Not much finish, pineapple, yeast, slightly spicy, nicely integrated acidity
  13% £7.99. Organic. Very nice, probably go here for a cheap quaffer.

• 2007 Bodega Melipal Malbec Rosé 79 Points

  Argentina, Mendoza

  Nose: Raspberry, cherry, cranberry(?) and caramel
  Mouth: Bitter, sour, acrid, big finish, very dry and not much fruit...perhaps some savouryness.
  13% £6.49. The nose promises so much more than the palate. Disappointing.

• 2007 Vavasour Pinot Noir Dashwood 85 Points

  New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough

  Nose: Kerosene, mushroom - shiitake to be specific, musty, raspberry, cloves
  Mouth: white pepper, raspberry, coffee/dark chocolate, not much finish
  13% £11.49. 50% aged in French oak. Pretty good example of a Kiwi Pinot Noir.
