Masters Superfish, London SE1

This was a huge treat for me to spend an evening with six guys who all knew an incredible amount about champagne and brought along some wonderful esoteric bottles to share. I really enjoyed the bracing quality of the low dosage grower champagnes, but I'm still a sucker for the big thick rich ones like the Henriot and the amazing Selosse.

2000 Pierson Whitaker Champagne Grand Cru Brut Millésimé 89 Points
France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
An almost riesliing like florality, creamy, soft, rich and rather lovely

2004 Roses de Jeanne / Cédric Bouchard Champagne Rosé de Saignée Creux d'Enfer
France, Champagne
This had an extremely pretty rose petal nose, very gentle and subtle, it couldn't cope with the accompanying sardines

NV Tarlant Champagne La Vigne d'Or Blanc de Meuniers Extra Brut 89 Points
France, Champagne
Had a most distinctive flavour which I couldn't quite put my finger on - honeysuckle, melon, a bit medicinal, started as though it was going to be oxidative then wasn't - unusual, but enticing

1996 Henriot Champagne Brut Millésimé 92 Points
France, Champagne
After a string of ultra fresh grower champagnes, this came over as huge, big, fat and caramel sweet - not subtle, but I loved it

1998 Pol Roger Champagne Blanc de Chardonnay 91 Points
France, Champagne
A touch acrid on entry, and after the squidgy Henriot, this seemed steely and structured, but I found the minerality exhilarating

NV Jacques Selosse Substance 93 Points
France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Huge, rich and oaky, but with a pulsating energy which lifted it - very exciting

1990 Jacquesson & Fils Champagne Dégorgement Tardive Extra Brut 93 Points
France, Champagne
Pale and shy to start with on the nose, but loads of fizz, this was deceptive - would never have guessed it was a 1990 nor that it was non-dose. Flinty at first, it opened up deep, rich and mineral - complete.
