  • 2001 Château Lynch-Bages 89 Points

    Nose: Chocolate, tobacco, cedar
Mouth: Smooth, balanced tannins, some acidity, not a very long finish.
    Quite light and forgettable. .

  • 1996 Château Lynch-Bages 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Nose: cigarbox, leather, brambles
Mouth: Tannic and meaty, some fruit there but still quite closed, for me, almost austere but not in a bad way. Good mouth feel and a lovely long finish.
Rating reflects relative price as well - if it was a bit cheaper it would be 93-94.

  • 2005 Château Haut-Bailly La Parde de Haut Bailly 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Nose: Black fruits - blackberry, currants, and, oddly, cherry for me.
Mouth: Everything and then some, acid, tannin, fruit, huge mouth feel, long finish, all over the place and still very, very young.
This was marvellous value and is my first crack at a 2005. I have some others tucked away in my cellar and I think a case of this will be joining them. Rating reflects value for money.

  • 2004 Château Haut-Bailly 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Nose: Bacon, Toast, fruit cake, horse sweat
Mouth: tobacco, blackcurrant, some tannin, not much mouth feel, not much finish.
Had this after the 2005 La Parde de Haut Bailly and, whilst this was more sophisticated, it was pretty much blown away by the richness of the 2nd wine.

  • 1999 Château Léoville Poyferré 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Nose: lovely fruitiness, chocolate, cedar, wonderful fruit in fact.
Mouth: tannin, not much fruit at all. some licorice. Not much mouth feel or length on the finish. Disappointing as so much was offered on the nose.

  • 2005 Château Léoville Poyferré 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Nose: Rich, fruity but not stewed jammy fruit. Underlying savoury meatiness that sits there insisting that you drink it.
Mouth: Massive fruit, tannin and acidity, some pepper, huge finish.
Best wine of the evening for me. I'm not a big fan of huge wines but this is just so good. More for the cellar I suspect.
