    Open nose with cassis fruit, vanilla oak and some spice. Aromatic. Youthful, pure cassis fruit on the palate, fresh and vibrant, ripe, fine tannins and an attractive lingering finish. ****

  • 2003 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    More closed on the nose than the 2004 - with riper black fruits and a slight note of coffee. Fuller bodied, more serious and tannic with riper black fruit, somewhat muted acidity and quite a firm finish. Not completely sure about this ***(*?).

  • 2002 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Less intense on the nose than the previous 2 wines, slightly earthy with an unexpected vegetal, almost green pepper note. The palate is better, with some attractive strawberry fruit, but it finishes quite tight and firm. **(*).

  • 2001 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

    Attractive, pure red toned fruit on the nose, some vanilla. Quite youthful still, some floral notes. Well balanced on the palate with approachable, fine tannins and attractive fresh acidity. Good length finish. Liked this! ****

  • 2000 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

    Noticeably more intense nose, riper and darker (cassis) fruit, a lot of oak still. Oak currently dominates the palate too but there is also plenty of fruit so it may well come together. Firm finish. Not much fun at the moment - certainly needs a few more years. **(**?).

Flight 3 - Ninety "mid-weights" (4 Notes)

  • 1999 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Noticeably more developed on the nose, dark fruit, nots of coffee and earth, some red-toned fruit (strawberry) too. On the palate not particulalry intense, easy, red fruit, vanilla, integrated tannins, medium length finish with earthy notes. Drinking now and not for the long term, attractive enough but lacking something on the mid-palate. ***

  • 1998 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Markedly more youthful nose, cassis fruit, vanilla. More structured on the palate, but with good depth of fruit and attractive, fresh acidity on the good length finish. Needs more time but has the potential to be excellent. ***(*).

  • 1997 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

    Medium garnet core, wide pale garnet rim. Developed, slightly vegetal nose, some sweet red fruit too. Attractive creamy fruit on the mid-palate, fully resolved tannins. Harmonious if a little hollow, medium length finish. Has perhaps seen better days. **

    Odd, slightly cheesy nose, but with some attractive sweet red fruit underneath. Lean on the palate, cheesy, with a medium length finish which again shows some attractive red fruit. Slightly odd - some thought slightly corked - but drinkable. *

  • 1986 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Relatively youthful appearance. Slightly lactic nose initialy, blowing off to reveal some sweet red fruit and an attractive, slightly bitter edge. Sweet red fruit on the palate, harmonious and mature with no hard edges if not particulalry intense or long. ***

  • 1970 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

    Slightly irony, bitter, classic slightly unripe developed claret nose, but also with hints of tea and leaf. Oddly attractive but let down by the lean, tired mid-palate and short, hard finish. *

    Complex, mature nose, with plenty of moist earth, coffee and a note of game. Slightly firm on the palate with with energy and life, some attractive spicy, minerally fruit and a sneaky lingering finish. Lovely. ****

    Classic 1990 nose with red, slightly baked earth fruit. Aromtaic and very sweet. Red (strawberry) fruit on the palate, some sweet, caramel notes, sweet and long but not quite as intense or structured as the 1989. Nonetheless very good indeed . ****1/2

    Beefy, dark fruited, deep, savoury nose. Cassis fruit on the palate, deep, intense, savoury but sweet too, if still quite firm, very long. Lovely, my WOTN. *****

  • 1986 Château Climens

    From half bottle. Very cocnutty, exotic nose, sweet but tremendously complex too. Some candied peach. Lovely on alive on the palate, rich and sweet but also lovely and fresh with a long finish with lovely fresh, orangey acidity. Stunning. *****
