Introduction
This is the second Costes du Rhone dinner I have attended and these are real fun BYO events. I decided to bring out the La Chapelles tonight and they decided to show well - finally. It also happened to be Jay's birthday, so it was a celebration too. Looking forward to the next one.

1990 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle 96 Points

Brought to Commanderie des Costes du Rhone dinner at Cafe des Artistes - Much bigger than the '78. Raw meat, smoke, some spice, round tannins and plenty of acidity, long, dark finish. Still looking for that 100 pt bottle, although Jason thought this bottle was 99 pts.

1961 M. Chapoutier Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Bernardine Flawed

Tasted at Commanderie des Costes du Rhone dinner at Cafe des Artistes - Jay brought the '59 to the Big Four - O, so we were all looking forward to the '61. Unfortunately it had turned and was a combination of vinegar, old coffee grinds and birch. Probably could have been drinkable with Parmigiano-Reggiano given the vinegar flavors.

1990 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 92 Points

Tasted at Commanderie des Costes du Rhone dinner at Cafe des Artistes - Neil's bottle. Bordeaux nose on first pour just like the one I had last week. However, this mellowed quickly and the barnyard, cherry, peppery spice that I associate with this wine soon emerged.

1999 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve 85 Points

Tasted at Commanderie des Costes du Rhone dinner at Cafe des Artistes - I have had some really great bottles of Rayas, but this was not one of them. The nose was rotting corn stalks (sileage) with a little other barnyard. Very light style, grenachy, pepper, acidic finish.

1978 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle 94 Points

Brought to Commanderie des Costes du Rhone dinner at Cafe des Artistes - Spicy, smokey, salty oysters upon opening, not what I associate with a great Rhone and much different than the 3 other disappointing bottles of this wine that I have had. However, this turned around quickly and the salty oyster turned into salty, smoked bacon. Got bigger in the decanter and kept improving until we finished it. Still looking for that 100 pt bottle.

1989 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle 91 Points

Tasted at Commanderie des Costes du Rhone dinner at Cafe des Artistes - Really tight on the nose, just a touch of lilac, but nothing else. The texture of this wine, however, was amazing. So smooth and round, perfect balance. The wine appeared shut down, because there was no fruit, just texture. I would love to try this again in a few years.

1995 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Pignan Reserve 91 Points

Brought to Commanderie des Costes du Rhone dinner at Cafe des Artistes - Standard CDP profile, lighter style, spice, sour cherry, strawberry, more acidic, light tannins. Drank nice out of the bottle, but did not have time to let it open up. Pignan usually takes at least an hour. Probably more points had we aired it, but still not on par with the '89/'90.

1990 Les Cailloux (Lucien et André Brunel) Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Centenaire 97 Points

Tasted at Commanderie des Costes du Rhone dinner at Cafe Des Artistes - Jason's bottle. I thought this bested the '90 La Chapelle. Hopefully the '00 reaches this level.

2000 Les Cailloux (Lucien et André Brunel) Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Centenaire 93 Points

Tasted at Commanderie des Costes du Rhone dinner at Cafe Des Artistes - Jason's bottle. From magnum, still too young, but with lot's of promise. Will garner more points as it ages.
