Nose: Stone fruit, almonds, apricot, blossom - floral - herbaceous but just a touch, and a little rubber Mouth: Orange, some acidity, not much oak or malo, not much of anything for me. Not for me...I've spent too much time with new world chardonnay...
Nose: Butter, yeast, apricot, peach Mouth: Some wood, malo, acid, perhaps a touch of residual sugar, apple and pear, cinnamon, long finish that reveals cloves. Good mouth feel with a rich viscosity to it. I'd happily go here again. Nice quaffer that would stand up well with chicken...or a fish pie with cod and smoked haddock...mmm.
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux
Nose: Cherries, vegetal matter, figs, white pepper, vanilla, toast, perhaps some licorice, not a 'weighty' nose Mouth: Tannin with tannin and a touch of tannin. a little plain chocolate, not much fruit (if any) and a little acidity/bite. Don't like this at all. I'm not sure how they managed to produce such an austere wine in such a great vintage. If money was completely limitless then I might just buy a bottle to put down for seven years, open up, scowl and then pour it down the sink...
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru
Nose: Cherry, savoury, mushrooms, pepper, plums, blackcurrant, perhaps violets... Mouth: Tannin, mince meat, alcohol, pepper, mint, not a very long finish but nice. If this wine was half the price it is (£44.99) then I'd probably buy a bottle but it's just not good enough to warrant this cost - I could get a bottle of the far nice Leoville-Poyferre for this much (I hasten to add this is only my opinion)
Nose: Sweaty horse, pig manure, touch of brett/perhaps TCP as well, tobacco, cigar box, cedar, blackcurrant Mouth: Savoury fruit, venison, licorice, black fruit, cloves, nutmeg, pepper, lovely I really enjoyed this. When it was first opened the stink of pig manure (and the brett) made us think it might be flawed but, upon opening another bottle, we realised that it just stank of, well, ahem, poo! But it was very nice, both of them. Happily go here again. Far nicer than the 94 I had a few months ago.
Nose: butter, black fruits, plum, creme de cassis in fact, almonds, a little tobacco and leather, just very nice. Mouth: cream de cassis, lovely, very smooth, very silky/velvety tannins, vanilla, cinnamon and some pepper on a lovely long finish I have a bottle of this in the cellar and was happy to have the opportunity to try it at a tasting. I was even happier when I'd tasted it! Lovely.
Nose: Christmas cake, rancio, toffee, demera sugar, maraschino cherry, caramel, walnuts Mouth: Cream, oil/viscosity, christmas pudding, clove, nutmeg, walnuts, little acidity as well Very nice indeed. Very very nice in fact. Jolly nice. And at a reasonable price (compared to vintage port for instance). Happily go here again.
France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Rivesaltes
Nose: Black Treacle, chocolate, licorice, figs, bonfire/toast, yeast, perhaps stout/porter beer, spices Mouth: Farleys rusk, honey, almost salty as well, very hard to explain. Incredibly long finish and the flavour develops in the mouth as the finish continues. Some rancio as well. Lovely. Might have to get a bottle of this and then spend some time with it.
