Shangri-La, Singapore

Elsa and I had a lovely dinner with Edmund, Shuming, John and Elaine. Chef Kevin Cherkas who used to cook with Feran Adria at El Bulli served us one of the most creatively imaginative and whimsciallly playful meals I have ever had in Singapore. Thank goodness the food was pretty yummy too.
Pity the crazy $80++ per bottle corkage prohibited us from bringing really good wines, which might have enhanced the meal. At the end of the day, we got two bottles and paid a pretty high mark-up as well. Wines were decent though, and a pretty interesting pairing with the food.

Not the most complex of wines, but I thought this was very decent drinking. White flowers, ripe lemons, loads of mineral and sweeter tones of musky peach, apricot and banana(?) on the nose, along with flowery chamomile and lemongrass scents. Very promising. Sweet palate, rich, creamy, lots of mineral again, rather sticky almost Spat like, but with plenty of acidity. Very young I thought, with lots of primary fruit - apricots, peaches, banana, dried mangoes -but the essential balance was there. Decent finish as well.

2004 Domaine du Château de Meursault Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epenots 90 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Very pleasant wine, not sure I would have picked it out as a Pommard if served blind, but certainly an enjoyable drink. Lovely nose, with classic Côte de Beaune stylings of cherry, raspberry jam, dried strawberry, dried mushroom and plenty of vintage character in its woody spice, dried herbs and bramble. All rather high-toned and quite pretty without being effeminate. Even more 2004 characteristics on the palate, which attack with sprinklings of wood spice and herbs. Unlike quite a few of the 2004 Côte de Beaune I have tired though, this had none of the green touch that haunts the vintage. Rather, the herbacious came across as a nice part of the wine, rather fragrant and charming, and nicely integrated with fruit notes like strawberries and cherries. Very nicely balanced throughout. Just a bit lightweight on midpalate I thought, but otherwise, the wine held lots of charm. Okay finish, with a tiny linger of wood spice and, as the wine opened up, orange peel and stewed tea. Pretty forward, which is unusual for a Pommard, but this should age quite well and develop more complexity. Very good with baby lamb and pretty decent with cod, which surprised me a little.
