Search for an everyday Australian Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc

Introduction

I recently moved from the states to Sydney Australia and have started to get settled in by finding a good everyday Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc that won't break the bank (under $15 US). Here are my notes:

Flight 1 - Chardonnay (5 Notes)

    Bought this wine looking for an everyday Chardonnay ($10 au). Was OK, relatively full of fruit. Possibly a little sweet. Will keep looking for that everyday wine.

  • 2004 Miranda Chardonnay High Country Cool Climate Wine 80 Points

    Looking for a good everyday wine here in Australia. This one is the best so far, less a typical Chardonnay, but more a citrisy sauvignaun Blanc type. Really nice balance with good fruit and very clean. Although aged in oak barrels, no noticible oak in the wine.

    Bought at the recommendation of the local wine merchant for a table wine. Too sweet for my tastes. Ill look elsewhere for my table-wine.

  • 2003 Bunnamagoo Estate Chardonnay 85 Points

    In my quest to find a good every-day chardonnay, this was my 4th wine to try and the best so far! A nice clean flavor, with a good, "buttery" mouth feel. Great balance. Very true to style. Good finish. Would recommend and will be out buying a case of this. It sells for about $15au = $12us.

  • 2003 3 Oceans Wine Company / Palandri Chardonnay 88 Points

    A very nice, full bodied/buttery Chardonnay. Good value at $18au = $15us. Has notes of oak and vanalla but not over oaked. Very nice balance. Very nice aroma. Enjoyed it quite a bit. (Not at all biased by drinking it while eating fish and chips under the Sydney Harbour bridge with the Opera House just across the water.) Price pushes it out of the "everday wine" category that I am so fond of, but good wine for a special dinner.

    Was looking for an everyday Sauvignon Blanc, so might sights were not high. Although this is not a bad wine, I hold the New Zealand suvignon blancs as the exemplary of a Sauvignon Blanc. This wine was too acidic up front and then did not have the strong fruit/citrus that is so essential to a balanced s-blanc. I'll keep looking.

    In my quest for an "everyday" Sauvignon Blanc (i.e. about $10/bottle), the Stoneleigh came across my table... And it would suffice for the purpose. Has all the characteristics of a new Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, the very clean taste, good grapefruit and fruit flavors balanced with some sweetness, and the price is right. So this may find its way into my fridge again.

    Starts out like it will be good. Nice aroma with ripe tropical fruit overtones that one expects from a NZ saugvignon blanc. Alas once tasted the overly heavy acid wipes out what could be an OK wine. Instead you are left with a finish as if a drop of detergent got into the glass.

    Better than some of the sauv blancs in this price range, but that is not saying much. not a bad flavor, but overbalanced on the acid at the finish.

  • 2005 Robinsons Sauvignon Blanc Wairau River 89 Points

    A very nice, true to new zealand sauv blan style, wine. Nose is a little thin and flavors missing a little of the tropical fruit depth that could make this great. but the finish is extended with a wonderful grapefruit flavor and just the right amount of sweet to make a very nice wine for a hot day. I would definitely have again.

  • 2004 Dashwood Sauvignon Blanc 75 Points

    "Thin" sums this one up. Not much nose, no depth in the flavor (ie lacking the deep tropical fruit flavors in a great NZ sav blanc). The finish is over-before-it-starts with a puckery acidity. [Drank at the North Sydney Noodle Markets]
