This had the lightest color, and was probably the most delicate and definitely the most floral of the group. No danger of decline, but I doubt this will be one of the longer lived examples.
In contrast to the '97, this was the darkest of the wines, but less advanced than the '95. Surprisingly, the sharp acidity of 1996 had relaxed somewhat and the fruit was relatively neutral at this point. Overall sense was closed right now and too young.
This had the most soaring, complex nose, a combination of smoky, petrol tones, and a hint of what someone aptly described as candied pineapple. By far, the most exotic wine, viscous in this context, and one that people will love or hate depending upon their tolerance for those unique high tones that Alsatian Riesling can develop. I found the complexity and evolution over the evening thrilling. These two '95s definitely shared ripeness and weight.
In stark contrast, the oldest bottle seemed the most youthful of the bunch. Light, limpid in color, very backward on the nose and palate, with limestone minerality coaxed out of it only after being open for about 4 hours. The perfect Riesling for Chablis lovers. I don't know if it has all of the components to a be a transcendent Clos St. Hune, but it will last forever.

This has a thicker mouthfell than the 2 previous younger wines with dry peach fruit. Just entering its plateau of maturity, it seems.
