Dan's Place
Tasted Friday, June 19, 2009 by David Paris with 776 views
We gathered at Dan's house near the Throbbing Cobra adult shop to taste through some Sangiovese wines... was thinking we'd get some new world wines, but everything wound up Italian. Fine by me!
2004 Lisini Rosso di Montalcino 90 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino
Popped and poured 30 minutes later. Very slight funk on the nose, showing crushed acidic cranberry, and dry chalk powder. Nice and fresh. Nice dark fruit but becoming dry and acidic (also brighter) on the palate. Eventually turns to some funky old berry hard candy that's been sitting on the store shelf for a few years. Dry and tannic on the finish, showing some slight cherry. Seems to have some age on it, but I think it will develop more with additional time. A pleasing wine. My 2nd and group's 2nd of the night.

2005 Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 85 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
Shows oak, candied fruit, and sugar cookie dough on the nose. Very soft and mellow on the mid-palate, showing nice mild fruit, but no edges. Not very interesting. This continues onto the finish, which is quite mellow, boring, and this whole thing seems like it's blasted with oak. The oak flavor isn't necessarily intense throughout, but the whole wine feels way too softened.

2006 Castello Banfi Chianti Classico 84 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
Smells like the kitchen trash basket, rotten cherries, and graphite. Soft and creamy on the palate, developing some tannins. Light cherry fruit also present. Quite dry on the finish, but showing some nice acidity. It all covers up the fruit quite a bit though, so not much is showing through. Not too interesting.

2005 Castello dei Rampolla Chianti Classico 88 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
Very fruit forward on the nose, showing spicy red bell peppers. Wow, this is bizare, but I get BIG TIME nag champa incense on the mid-palate! Totally... it smells like I just walked into a hippie shop and it's also covered in cranberries throughout. Bitter tannins on the finish, some chalk, and very tight. The incense is also present on the finish. I actually quite like the incense aspect, which made me score this higher than I otherwise probably would have. I like hippies, I guess. Not ranked by me, but scored 3rd of the night by the group.

2006 Pian dell'Orino Rosso di Montalcino 89 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino
Some funky mushrooms, spice, crushed cranberry, and graphite present themselves on the nose. Very bright, pretty fruit, and almost mature tasting. Nice tannins present on the finish, wigh great acidity. Becomes more drying as the finish lingers. Guessed 2004 Rosso di Mantalcino. Tastes a bit more mature than it is.

2003 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova 90 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Very deep, dark color. Darkest of the night. Smells mature... mature fruit present on the nose (plums, deep dark fruits), but also this interesting saltine cracker aroma. Deep fruit present on the palate, again tasting mature, and tastes of the woods, including pinecones. Mature tasting on the finish, including deep fruits, mushrooms, and other fungi. Surprised when this was revealed, as it's quite young though doesn't taste it. My wine of the night, as well as the group's.

2005 Renzo Marinai Chianti Classico 90 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
Quite dark as well. This smells like a really stinky, wet fart after someone ate too much fruit. Though, there is also some nice fruit after a bunch of swirling. Coming back to the wine later, some of that rancid funk has blown off and showing more nice fruit. The mid-palate is much more pleasing overall, showing nice bright fruit, and is quite delicious in the mouth. Still tannic, but mildly so, and only the slightest bit of funk. Nice pepper on the finish, some tannins, and nice dark fruits.

2007 Moris Farms Morellino di Scansano 72 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Maremma, Morellino di Scansano
Quite terrible... really, just pretty darn terrible. This smells like a horrible new world wine. Shows oak, is really astringent, and just smells like something I do not want to put in my mouth. The fruit on the mid-palate is better than suggested by the fakeish nose, but as it stays in the mouth it gets more and more boring and gross. Finish is also very boring, showing some light funk. Not the worst wine I've had, but really no pleasure is to be had by consuming this.

2006 La Spinetta (Rivetti) Il Nero di Casanova Toscana IGT 81 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
Really don't enjoy this wine... it's very tight on the nose and a bit acidic. Bright tart fruit is present on the palate, but it's still tight and boring. The finish is also completely boring, showing nothing but tannins. It's a very tight wine, but not one that I expect to open up over time... there just isn't much here that's interesting. Was surprised to see this revealed, though nice to see my note is consistent on this from the previous vintage, this time in a blind tasting. Just very boring.

2006 Badia a Coltibuono Chianti Classico 80 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
Smells mature... though something is odd here. It really smells like a boxed cake mix, complete with frosting and candy sprinkles. Smells fake. Bright fruit is present on the palate, no real tannins, but it's candied tasting. Candied fruit but still no tannins on the finish... this tastes like a completely resolved wine. Surprised to see it's 2006 upon reveal.
