1999 Domaine Ramonet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champs Canet 93 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Lovely wine - drinking right in its sweet spot now. Nose showed mature characteristics of mushroom, umami and a light touch of chicken stock together with red apples, pears, buttery accents and smoked walnuts, with honey notes coming out with time. Certainly not explosive like a Leflaive or Coche-Dury, but with tons of understated depth. Same theme on the palate. Plenty of class in its understated richness. Very complete wine this, with great balance and verve undergirding gentle but very deep waves of flavours that washed through the palate. Gorgeous red apples on the attack, green apples on midplate, and then ripe lemons, mushrooms, butter, smoke and nuts - all with plenty of flesh and a lovely minerality. Finish is full of sappy, juicy fruit with long draw of smoky minerals. Excellent.

2001 Domaine Joseph Roty Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Brunelle 91 Points

A truly excellent village. We drank this after an hour's decant. Nose had roast meat, dark cherries and smoky minerals. Beautiful. All mingled with very masculine Gevrey notes - touches of leather, earth, soil, stewed shitake mushrooms and a little spice. Gorgeous nose really. Great definition on palate too, with beautiful freshness in its snappy cherries in the attack, and a clean, pure mid-palate with lovely red fruits, all crystallined and gummy. Plenty of pulling power here. Open, resounding finish, with more juicy fruit and tiny minerals and squeeze of orange peel. Faded as it hit the second hour, with acid coming to the fore. But really drinking at a beautiful place for most of the glass.

1986 Château Pape Clément 93 Points

Drinking at its absolute peak at the moment, and just oozing with class. Rich, perfumy nose, with wilted flowers, plums, damson, some red fruit, earthy soil, damp gravel, warm tobacco, and a hint of latte, all underscored by a little smoke that grew with time. Lovely, live cleanness on the palate, with more smoke, cigar like, with fresh cassis and plums, all singing beautifully now in a plush robe of silkily resolved tannins. Finish was gentley smoking away with more earth, gravelly mineral and plums. Gorgeous. Absolutely enjoyable - drink now!

2002 Château Cheval Blanc Le Petit Cheval 91 Points

Still rather simple and primary, but otherwise drinking very nicely indeed. Cigarette smoke, a little toasty vanilla, flowers, and rich cassis and savoury earth note made for an attractive nose. lovely focused palate as well. Not too much on power, but very nicely defined spice, plums and cassis with lovely acid and fine tannins. Finish was medium-lengthed, with cherries and more puffs of smoke. Very nice.
