Introduction

What a great way to spend a Tuesday evening :-)

Flight 1 - Opening wines just to get the evening started (2 Notes)

  • 1995 Argiano Brunello di Montalcino

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Perfectly mature now!!
    Taste of leather, sweet cherry and overal a very nice balance.
    Not a huge wine but drinking nicely now. Does lack a little fullness and it finishes a little short.

  • 1997 Brunelli Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

    Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

    Nose is packed with sweetness and blackberries. Also hints of coffee, dark plum and a lot of chocolate. The alcohol is also quite powerful in the nose.
    Still very young flavour-wise with ripe dark plums, prunes and dark chocolate but also with somy meaty flavours.
    The acidity is nice and balances the flavours sufficiently. However the alcohol is a little powerful in the end. Lots of life left.

Flight 2 - Two big Antinori wines (2 Notes)

  • 2004 Antinori Tignanello

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    The nose starts out a little funky with cabbage and onions but ends with a lot of different spices.
    Refreshing dark plum fruit with hints of coffee and in the end a little buttermilk. The tannins are very harsh with a spicy feel to it and it is difficult to get the wine to open up. Really nice and refreshing length but it was apparantly very closed and even after a couple of hours it would not really open.. It does however feel like there is a lot of things going on underneath. A wine that will be interesting to follow.

  • 2004 Antinori Solaia 96 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    Nose is filled with black currant, menthol, pencil shavings and has a nice fullness to it.
    In the mouth it has dark plums, black currant, some chocolate and a little coffee. Excellent structure with a really nice dryness to it with a gripping acidity. Very primary but still a beautiful and balanced wine. Amazing.

Flight 3 - Powerful Amarones (2 Notes)

  • 2004 Marion Amarone della Valpolicella

    Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella

    The nose is quite special with cabbage, dark cherry, nail polish, rosemay and even some peach and to some extent ripe banana. It also has some volatile acidity.
    Tasting the wine again blew me away. However, not as huge and impressive as previously but the wine simply has an a massive structure. Incredibly complex but still a quite powerful wine that perhaps is an aquired taste :-)
    There is some dark plum fruit and a hint of vanilla and some tropical fruit in the midpalate. Amazingly piercing acidity.
    The complexity and structure is very impressive.

  • 2000 Stefano Accordini Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Vigneto Il Fornetto

    Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

    WOW. The nose just jumps at you with all the classic stuff from a big Amarone. Varnish, spices, raisins, prunes and also some dill.
    The taste is everything an Amarone should be. Big powerful fruit, plums and raisins a lot of liquorice and a piercing acidity. Very long and impressive finish.
    A huge wine!!

Flight 4 - What a way to end the evening. (1 Note)

  • 1990 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon

    France, Champagne

    The nose is very intense, freshly ground coffee, sweet yellow apples and macaroons.
    Amazingly explosive in the mouth (mousse) with great fresh flavours. Some brioche and coffe with a full fruit. Very impressive acidity with also some sea-water flavours.
    Still filled with green apples and has a nice "toastyness". Some nice minerals but also lemons..
    Very complex and impressive wine.. I was VERY impressed.
    Still very young!!
