Introduction
Scott put on a nice Intro Retro reminding us that Australia isn't evil by definition and that there are lots of good wines to be had there. I will say, there was a clear stylistic homogeneity once you got past the Margaret River and the Dead Arms.
All wines served (double in this case) blind as usual.
1999 Happs Shiraz Three Hills 88 Points

Group #9, My #11 - Full opaque purple color. Prickly black fruit nose with a strong olive note and a hint of heat. Forward black tannic fruit and olive with earthy notes.

1999 d'Arenberg Shiraz The Dead Arm 93 Points

Group #11, My #8 - Full deep red color. Full briar red fruit nose with a touch of spice, briar, and eucalyptus. Lovely spicey red fruit with a firm dustry tannis structure. Didn't hold up in the glass as well as I'd have expected - drink up?

Group #10, My #10 - Another disappointing showing for this wine - I hope it's just bottle variation. Full deep red color. Medium nose of red and black fruit sweet tart. Big bold black fruit with some round firm tannins on the finish. Also didn't hold up that well over the evening in the glass...

Group #8, My #5 - Full opaque purple color. Wow - huge nose of sweet blueberry compote. Mmmn, nice round full black and blue fruit. Thick and rich, but balanced with a chocolate note.

2001 Barton Vale Shiraz The Challenger 94 Points

Grou #6, My #4 - This wine has come together nicely over the past few years and is showing very well right now. Full opaque black/red color. Big nose of canned balck fruit with asphalt notes (reminiscint of an Alban). Full serious black fruit and asphalt on the palate. Concentrated but balanced.

Group #2, My #1 - Full opaque black color. Big nose of blue blackberry spice cake with cedar notes. Wow - huge cassis round but good balance and acidity. Long lingering finish. Really lovely.

Group #4, My #3 - This wine continues on its upward trajectory, even if it isn't as good as the 03. Full opaque black color. Big full nose of blackberry cassis liquer. Shot full of black cherry fruit liquer with a bit of sweet and a long finish.

Group 37, My #6 - Full opaque black color. Big bright black nose with lots of acidity and a hint of spice. Big spicy black fruit on the palate with a lon gtannic spicy finish. Rounded out and sweetened up a bit with air. 93-94 pts.

Group #1, My #9 - the only big disconnect in ranking for me in this tasting. Full opaque black color. Big black fruit spice and asphalt with a pretty generous slathering of oak on the nose. Big super spice juicy black fruit on the plalate with a searing finish.
