Introduction

At home with Turtles and Stees. Summer pasta with crumbled sausage and grilled squash.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

These stood up in the cellar for 30 days. Were opened 90 minutes out of the cellar--temp about 65F.

  • 1975 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Popped and poured. Great color with just a hint of brown at the edges. Really musty nose nose (nice), saddle leather and shoe polish. Of the 4 wines this gave the least.

  • 1978 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Popped and poured. Old cellar floor in the nose with dust and dirt--nice. Beautiful tannins with a little grip. Old cedar wood that was silky and elegant. After about 30 minutes of air and warming up, it blossomed. This had the longest finish of the 4 in the vertical tasting.

  • 1982 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Popped and poured. Great clear color. This was classically balanced and a succinct, refined experience. It needed about 30 minutes in the glass to open up. After about an hour is showed lots of tar and petroleum in the nose.

  • 1988 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Popped and poured. Awesome nose of straw, bell pepper and bright fruit. Of the four in the vertical this was the raciest and was the only that will improve with more cellar time. Taste it again in 2015.

Closing

It was exciting drinking these side-by-side. There were lots of common traits. Colors medium-bright red; medium viscosity; semi-restrained and controlled tannins, medium body; nice acid balance with some animal traits. Overall, there were not huge differences across the vintages. The only noticeable missing feature were the finish, which was too short.
