Flight 1 - A STARTER WINE (1 Note)

  • 2007 Txomin Etxaniz Getariako Txakolina 88 Points

    Spain, País Vasco, Getariako Txakolina

    Very Vinho Verde-like. Crisp green apples, pears, slight spritz. Not very complex, and not in the same league as the white Burgs tasted tonight... but it actually paired better than the white Burgs with my dish, which was very spicy.

Flight 2 - FIRST COURSE (spicy squid salad) (3 Notes)

  • 2002 Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Charlemagne Domaine 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

    Medium yellow in color. Very expressive on the nose, with cream, lemons, custard and a hint of coconut. Flavors carry on through to the palate. Unusually rich for the appelation, but good acids keep the richness in check. Some minerals peek through on this enjoyable white Burg. Much more accessable than I would have thought.

  • 2004 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

    Closed on the nose at first. With time this picked up weight and took on a paradoxicaly "butter" and "steely" profile at the same time. Good minerality and a whiplash finish that seemingly left, and then came back. Lovely ying/yang harmony.

    Rich for a Chablis, with a slight oak influence. Classic lemons and minerals. This took on an interesting malty quality that intrigued.

Flight 3 - SECOND COURSE (duck confit) (4 Notes)

    White pepper, plums, and nice minerality. Earthy elements in a refined texture. Very nice, well-rounded wine.

    This was fantastic... thank you Scott! An explosion of white pepper, tar and meat. This had so much fruit, yet still had "cut" and definition. Superb.

  • 1999 Domaine Tempier Bandol Cuvée Spéciale La Migoua 92 Points

    This had all the secondary "stinky" (in a good way) flavors you would want in a mature Bandol. Wet earth, sous bois, dried mushrooms and dried black fruits.

  • 1990 Château Pradeaux Bandol Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 93 Points

    This was a very nice example of a mature Bandol. Even more evolved flavors than the 99 Tempier La Migoua served next to it. Liquid tar, earth, pepper, mushrooms and dried raspberries in a silky texture, as the tannins seemed to be perfectly resolved. A round "almost milky" texture appeared with time, which was less than appealing; but this was delicious overall.
