Palest red of 4 wines, could be mistaken for something older. Fragrant with light strawberries, toffee, and a touch of oak. Light to medium weight, nice sweetness of fruit, lively acids and very little tannin. Some greener facets in the mouth. Finish fades quickly. An elegant, delicate example which I enjoyed.
Youthful looking ruby, quite extracted appearing for Pinot. Deeply pitched nose marked by wood and some perfume later. Fullish and round with dark fruit and ripe tannins. This lacks tension, definition, and interest; it just sits there ponderously.
Fairly light although a shade deeper than the Mongeard wine. Overwhelming sulfide smell mostly dissipated with the help of a penny to reveal a briary nose. The balance and weight were a relief after the Girardin. This has subtly sweet fruit, more acid than tannin, and a very pleasing laciness to its texture. Crisp and the most precise of the wines tasted. Performing above its class as a village wine and verging on excellent.
Darkest, thickest looking wine of the bunch, somewhat unnatural, in fact. Some spice on the nose, which broadens over time. Oaky base but nice mixture of red and blue fruit. Medium to full bodied, this is chewy and has lowish acid but does not come across as heavy as the Girardin, in part due to grainier, drier tannins. This does cling to the palate and it has just a bit of sap that none of the other wines possessed. Still, I preferred the 2 wines that were lighter but more lively, and although I like some of the elements here, I'm not convinced that this has the balance to knit together into something more special.
