Introduction

We veered from our normal big Cab based themes for Burgundy with mixed results. I think the fact that there was really only one Burg fan in the group worked against us. I'm still convinced that Chablis should declare independence from the lesser Burgundy appellations to the south. I probably would pick the two whites as my favorites on the evening. The reds were a real mixed bag with nothing sucking but nothing standing out either.

  • 2007 Jean-Marc Brocard Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    Very precise and tight, clean and concentrated with great length. Bright powerful acidity. Needs to unwind even though it was opened and decanted 10 hours prior to drinking. Hopefully no premox issues as this has lot's of potential.

  • 2005 Dehlinger Chardonnay

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    Lightly buttery lemon with some oak peaking out later. Rich yet balanced. A meaty quality, maybe chewy with some notes of nuts. Liked this a lot better than my last go around with it. Very good rich styled Cali Chard. The fruit seems to stand up to the oak here and I would bet this will get better with time.

  • 2005 Blain-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Rouge

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

    Some stank reduction, cherries, minerals and a touch of mint. Lean yet with mouth coating tannins. More notes of mint and cherry. I enjoyed this though it should be better as the tannins recede. Will probably never be a greatly complex wine but is clean and precise.

  • 2007 Pierre-Marie Chermette Fleurie Poncié

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie

    Lots of soil up front with the fruit in hiding. Juicy and well fruited with light pepper and plenty of mineral and soil notes. Made me think of a fruity Saumur-Champigny. Very good and in need of a couple years but the candy like fruit is a bit distracting in Gamay for me.

  • 1990 Faiveley Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Chaignots

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

    Earthy nose with notes of soil and oxidation. Rich up front and showing nice acids but short over all. Lean and tannic. Has seen better days but not dead.

  • 2005 Dehlinger Pinot Noir Goldridge

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    Big fruit on the nose with some pine notes and a bit of heat. Very California and very Sonoma. Big fruited though on the simple side. Good acids but they feel separated from the fruit. I would give this some time to integrate better.

  • 2006 Olivier Jouan Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Ruchots Vieilles Vignes

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru

    Nose showing graham crackers, sweet cherries with a baked quality and some heat. Juicy lively palate with a finish that is sweet and lean at the same time. Probably not for the usually Burg fan. Burgundy by way of California.

    Soft, rich and forward with late acting tannins. Lacked acidity.

  • 1988 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon The Montelena Estate

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    A tale of two wines. Terrific classically rich Cali Cab showing terrific integrated complexity with large notes of cedar and mocha. Seems to lack fruit on the palate being lean and getting a bit better with air but I'm willing to bet this was much better 5-10 years ago. Drink up.

  • 1991 Volker Eisele Family Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Not as good as my first bottle but a solid aged Cab. Nose of chocolate and earth. Rich thick palate with more chocolate. Balanced but on the heavy side. Would have liked more secondary qualities from a wine of this age. Will last for quite a while longer if one wanted to see if that development comes along.
