The 1970s, with a higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (around 70%), were not as round and lush as the 1980s, and were more astringent than the 1980s and 1990s. They were, however, what you may call classic St Estephe and it was enlightening to taste them.
2002 Château Cos d'Estournel
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe
Bright garnet. Closed but aromatic nose or spice and plums. Tight, chewy tannins. Primary dark fruit. Green on the finish.

2000 Château Cos d'Estournel

Deep garnet. Spicy oak on the intense grassy nose. Ripe plums and smooth silky tannins on the palate. Well integrated with uniform ripeness from attack to the long finish.

1996 Château Cos d'Estournel

Dark garnet. Herbal and green nose. Tighter than the 1995. Intense supple attack. Minerally, dry and tannic. Grumpy at this stage but the elegant finish a sign of better things to come.

1995 Château Cos d'Estournel

Nose less intense than the 1996 and rounder on the palate. Gritty tannins. Finishes elegantly.

Dark garnet with brick rim. Spicy nose with raw mushrooms. Smooth supple tannins. Intense but with clarity.

1982 Château Cos d'Estournel

Deep garnet with brown rim. Expressive nose of sweet jammy fruit. Haw. Silky, intense and fresh on the palate. Still young. Lovely. Wine of the flight.

Brown. Sweet port like nose. Angular and tannic.

1970 Château Cos d'Estournel

Brown but paler than the 1975. Sweet, caramelised port like nose. More astringent and tannic than the 1975 but also with more balance. Intense with a very long finish.
