Introduction

I swear that we intended to drink only Burgundy, but our plans were torpedoed by the charismatic sommelier/winemaker Raj Parr, who was kind enough to pour one of his own wines and that of a young Sonoma producer that the restaurant was featuring tonight.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2007 Domaine Pinson Frères Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Properly pale. An initial flash of fat was followed by an ever more defined, lean, light Chablis with a hint of wood and unrelenting salinity and a long mineral finish. Completely satisfying and mouthwatering late as it goes down.

  • 2005 Domaine de Montille Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Medium ruby with more transparent edges. Shockingly forward, inviting floral (rose) and earth aromas for a Montille wine, but the structure asserts itself in the second act, with anise, fine grained tannins, and powerful acidity. Some spice and red fruit come out as well. Bigger than the '05 Angervilles I've tried. Needs some time to integrate its two halves, but this is very Volnay and very beautiful wine. This is not your father's (or his father's) de Montille.

  • 2007 Cobb Pinot Noir Coastlands Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Fuller color than the de Monitlle. Cooler aromatics at first, but a New World cola aspect rose over time. A touch of oak, ripe cherry, but restrained. Good. This supposedly is one of the coolest California growing regions for Pinot, but it still showed its origins mainly through its signature nose.

  • 2007 Parr Wines Pinot Noir Seven Springs Vineyard

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Lighter and slightly browner than the first Cobb Sonoma wine. Intriguing scent with definite green notes. No fruit bomb this, it is light, racy, and very terroir driven. It is struggling against a sense of barely adequate ripeness. We were hardly surprised when Raj Parr told us that the vintage was difficult and that it was not destemmed. I'd love to try this in a slightly more phenolically ripe vintage. Allstar winemaking team here, with Dominique Lafon and Jeremy Seysses joining in.

  • 2007 Cobb Pinot Noir Joy Road Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Midway between the Cobb Coastlands and Parr wines in color. Although per the winemaker, the vineyard is just half a mile from Coastlands, this has a lighter, more delicate, higher acid feel to it than the former wine. Very good.
