Introduction
My wine friends had been discussing trying out some new rieslings for a while now, and we finally got around to it. Gavin picked up a few from producers he's familiar with, and with a couple other contributions, we had an event. Happily, all but one were new to me, so it was a great learning experience.

In the end, I was happy to try a Scheurebe that was enjoyable, and I found the Karthauserhof Spatlese quite enjoyable.
2002 Künstler Hochheimer Kirchenstück Riesling Auslese trocken 80 Points
Germany, Rheingau
Violets and honey are present on the nose, but they are super light. Apple flavors appear on the palate along with some honeycomb. There's some decent acidity as well as a flavor similar to white grapes from the grocery store. Decent drinking, but quite simple and light.

2006 Weingut Robert Weil Estate Riesling Dry 88 Points
Germany, Rheingau
Interesting nose here, with some green beans showing up along with the green apples. The front end of this is super light, almost non-existent. Some nice gentle apple flavors and acidity shows up on the mid palate. There's a hint of cream as well, and a nice mouth feel. The wine is super light, with almost no front end or finish, but it is well made.

2003 Müller-Catoir Haardter Bürgergarten Riesling Kabinett halbtrocken 89 Points

Very light apples and pineapple scents on this wine. It's quite light up front, with green apple appearing with some acidity on the mid palate. The acidity is firm and persistent through the experience, but not very strong. There's a nice light sweetness on the finish. It's well integrated, and there's a tiny hint of sweetness on the finish.

2003 Müller-Catoir Haardter Mandelring Scheurebe Spätlese 89 Points

It's always fun to try some less common varietals, and this was no exception. Acidity jumps right out of the nose along with something that reminds me of pasta noodles! It has a nice, light acidity on the beginning and peach flavors trail off nicely through the finish. The wine is clean and well made with an enjoyable finish. Recommended.

2007 Karthäuserhof Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberg Riesling Spätlese 90 Points

Rich apple scents and a hint of pastries hit the nose when the wine is sniffed. The apple flavors on the palate are lovely, and there is a lighter acidity that keeps things clean through out the whole experience. A nice note of honey rises up in the mid palate as well. Solid stuff!

2006 Karthäuserhof Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberg Riesling Auslese 80 Points

A light nose on this wine with some mineral notes that strike me as limestone, but I'm not terribly confident in that assertion. There are some light apple flavors up front that evolve into some nice acidity running down the sides of the palate. The addition of a pineapple note in the middle gets the wine off to a good start, and a bit of plum comes into play at the end to round things out. I first had this with thai food, and loved it. Without the food to wrap it up though, it felt totally imbalanced. The difference was quite shocking. I would've given it 90 on the first tasting, but as I tasted more and more, it just couldn't hold up. Pick up the spaetlese instead.

2007 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 89 Points

An interesting nose here with a hint of citrus rind as well as a bit of grapefruit, and some watermelon. On the palate, the acidity is light, and the watermelon delivers along with some rich apricot flavors. I'm left wanting more acidity and complexity and am wondering if this wine may be a weird place right now. Make no mistake, it's still very well done, and it has some nice flavors, but I'm not feeling any excitement.
