A dinner in celebration of our nation's 44th birthday! Reds and Whites.. colours of our national flag.
The champagnes paired really well with the lighter sushi and the fried tempura. The Burgs were lovely with the fattier fish. Although my favourite pairing had to be the Devaux Ultra D with the thick slices of swordfish sashimi. Yum!
A very ambitious line up of reds , all drinking fairly well and my WOTN being the Angerville Champans 2000 which I had previously tasted but didnt show as well as this time round.
An impressive lineup of wines fit for a state banquet.

Very developed nose, somewhat bready stinky, some petrol notes and some fishyness. Slightly oily with good weight and sappy lemons.

1999 Laurent-Perrier Champagne Brut Millésimé 84 Points
France, Champagne
Still consistently showing the same clean crispness with lemon lime, green apples and a light touch of yeasty fresh white bread note. Smooth and lingering mouth puckering finish.

Smoky, one dimensional and oaked. A trace of minerality but mostly buttery.

2004 Mischief and Mayhem Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts 84 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Quite rich with lovely walnutyness. Buttery and opulent with vanilla beans and showcasing a somewhat californian sunshine napa chard but I am very happy drinking this. Also has some mineral laced ripe sweet lemon fruits.

2005 Mischief and Mayhem Meursault 1er Cru Les Poruzots 83 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Low-toned nose smelling of welded metal, vanillin fine oak. Some minerality but being a meursault, I thought it a bit bland and not duly rich enough to match the terroir of its label but it does show restraint and exhibits balance in approach.
