Introduction

A dinner in celebration of our nation's 44th birthday! Reds and Whites.. colours of our national flag.

Flight 1 - Whites (8 Notes)

The champagnes paired really well with the lighter sushi and the fried tempura. The Burgs were lovely with the fattier fish. Although my favourite pairing had to be the Devaux Ultra D with the thick slices of swordfish sashimi. Yum!

Flight 2 - Reds (6 Notes)

A very ambitious line up of reds , all drinking fairly well and my WOTN being the Angerville Champans 2000 which I had previously tasted but didnt show as well as this time round.

Raspy floral nose of rose petals. Clean wine with good purity. Some wet stones minerality ending with metallic aftertaste. Very clean. Good effort.

  • 2000 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Champans 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Musky raspberries married in perfect harmony with lovely flowers and aged fruit characteristics. Enticing perfumed bouquet. A very complex layered wine that holds itself together with excellent composure. Earth, game and freshness all married into one. Circles in the mouth with an ethereal perfume of purple floral petals and stewed fruit undertones. Really showing at its best. This is a fine example of a good wine tasting great when tasted at its prime with good company.

  • 2000 Mongeard-Mugneret Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Orveaux 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Very floral but showing aged qualities of mature fruit. However, there is a rich streak of sweet raspberries and strawberries that runs through the wine as well, complemented by fresh cut flowers. Yet, this exhibits an aura of wisdom that comes with age. This is like a certain pig-tailed late middle-aged billionaire heiress that likes dressing up in cutesy clothes. An ole lil sweetie!

  • 2002 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées 84 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

At the moment, a big bunch of fresh flowers. Lovely, elegant and showing breed of nobility. Vibrant wine with good depth of flavours that is hard to dissect at the moment. Serious potential.

  • 1990 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) 84 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

Clean standard leathery notes with some funk that evolved into white pepper soup. Some green peppers too. This feels more masculine like a Pauillac .. not a first growth but reminiscent of a 2nd growth pauillac.Classy and excellent wine.

  • 1990 Camille Giroud Echezeaux 84 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Beautiful wine showing great sense of balance. Aged slightly stewed red cherries but still showing good weight. Lovely fruit profile and also throw in some herbs.
