Introduction

Yet another mid-weeker with some of the chaps from the Forum (Khamen, Toby, The Colonel, Kingkanu) that turned into a bit of a bender.

Started off with a couple of ice cold beers before Khamen came along and literally forced us to drink Krug and Lafite.

  • 2007 Domaine Chanson Chablis

    France, Burgundy, Chablis

    Very light colour - nose was sharp minerals with a touch of wet stones and delicate fruit. In the mouth decent fruit, sharp finish with a dash of minerality. Perfectly good summer wine.

  • 1996 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut

    Wow!!!. I am not a champagne man by any stretch of the imagination but this really was a step above anything I have ever tried before. Deep golden colour - incredibly pungent nose of yeast, biscuit. In the mouth an incredibly rich, nutty taste with peircing sharpness cutting through the fruit. Wonderful stuff.

  • 2000 Ayala Champagne Perle d'Ayala

    After drinking this next to a 96 Krug it was always going to struggle. This has a lovely fresh sharp taste with a crisp, yeasty finish. Good quaffing champagne. I would have baulked at the 120 quid price tag though.

  • 1995 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Surprisingly lighter than I was expecting. Elegant nose of dry herbs, chocolate, dirt. In the mouth very fine grained tannins mixed with smooth fruit with notes of bitter chocolate, meat and herbs. Decent follow through. To be honest was expecting a little bit more bang for my buck, but pretty decent stuff here. I'm not sure if I'll bother buying younger Beaucastel after tasting this - it obviously needs years and years until it is ready. This one was still a pup.

  • 2000 Château Léoville Barton

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

    Drank alongside a 2001 Lafite and this was much more primary, with strong tannins and an incredible depth of fruit. Really needs a lot more time, but this is oozes class. Years ahead of it.

  • 2001 Château Lafite Rothschild

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Drinking surprisingly well at the moment, this has elegant and structure all the way through it. The nose is incredibly light and elegant - wonderful nose of pencil shavings, cedar and spices. In the mouth wonderfully balanced fruit and perfect tannins that even at this young age are melting into the background. Long, complex, refined, elegant, stunning. Years ahead of it, but actually not a shame to drink now (if you can afford to)

  • 2003 Goretti Colli Perugini L' Arringatore

    Italy, Umbria, Colli Perugini

    Deep, red colour. Nose and taste reminds me of blood and iron. Very intense minerally taste. Good.

Closing

Finished the evening off (and ourselves) with mojito, manhattans and a wonderful cocktail with rum, creme de menthe and rasberries.
