Introduction
Our host decided to share some wines with us with the format of " double blind wines that are ready to drink, or maybe not" . Mostly Steffen is very generous and likes to surprise people in blind tasting. I have not blind tasted in a while and expected to do quite poorly in the double blind format. True.

1979 Château Belair (Dubois-Challon)
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru
90?? Tasted double blind; Dark ruby color with slight brown rim; The nose was a bit funky and slightly musty but the palate had nice rich fruit, earth (like a forest floor) with medium intensity. This wine was strong over the course of the evening. A good but not blockbuster wine that was up there in my top wines of the evening.

1989 Olga Raffault Chinon Les Picasses
France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon
Tasted double blind; This bottle tasted incredibly green for my palate. Others liked this a lot more. I liked a previous bottle of this wine so perhaps it was a bit warm. Again maybe the warmth but it seemed past peak to me.

1998 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Saint-Joseph 87 Points

Tasted double blind; Ruby color, slightly cloudy; Spicy oak on the nose with black olives, smoke, meat and slight red fruit on the palate; Short finish. Balanced. This seemed at peak with maybe a tired note.

2000 Vietti Barolo Ravera 90 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Tasted double blind; Dark clear ruby with a slightly brown rim; Spice on the nose with a hollow middle and short finish; Expressive but perhaps served on the warm side. This seemed older than a 2000 when revealed.

2000 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard 83 Points

Tasted double blind; Dark clear ruby color; Spice on the nose and some cherry fruit. This wine seemed simple and over the hill. Drink up.

1998 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Brune et Blonde

Tasted double blind; The nose was awful on this wine - it smelled like a whiff of pond scum to me. The palate was mainly herbal with no fruit. It almost didn't seem like wine. Flawed?

1999 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Brune et Blonde 91 Points

Tasted double blind; Dark ruby red; This had a spicy, peppery nose with black pepper, spice, coffee and red berry flavors ending with a touch of minerals on a long aromatic finish. Integrated, good and probably in its peak drinking window.

Tasted double blind; Dark ruby color, slight browning; This wine had a lot of spice on the nose but a big hollow palate and short finish. I puzzled over this wine for a bit with no answers. Seemed tired.

Tasted double blind; Spicy, anise on the nose with huge jammy red fruit flavors. Long, aromatic finish but with alcoholic heat.

2005 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Tasted double blind; Dark garnet color; Lots of oak and black pepper aromas and flavors along with red and dark fruits. Others liked this a lot but I found it overwhelming and hot on the finish. Maybe it became a bit warm before I tasted it. ??

2001 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova 89 Points

Tasted double blind; Spice and anise on the nose with dark fruit flavors; Lots of structure but not much sense of varietal. There was a touch of a type of flavor that I associate with Italian wines but that was as far as I could guess. Crisp acidity on the long finish. Thought it was a Barbera (there is some irony here with recent events). Not as good as the previous bottle.

2003 Château Pavie Macquin 90 Points

Tasted double blind; Med+ purple with a red rim. Dark fruit with classic cab aromas. Loads of dark fruit flavors and a bit of an overripe note. Slightly hot on the finish. Nice silky mouthfeel.
