Introduction

A new format for the VCTE, checking out Kabinetts and Spätleses from Germany over a week. I could only get two wines in FInland, one Kabinett and one Spätlese.

  • 2007 Dr. Loosen Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett 84 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    Part of the CT Forum Virtual Tasting Event. Cracked and poured at cellar temp. A nice shining pale golden yellow. The nose is fairly reticent, not giving off much initially. Some apple and pear, bit of sweet passionfruit in the background. This intensifies with airtime, after one hour, the nose is expressive, with melon and passionfruit. The palate is immediately hit by sweetness, apple juice comes to mind, not much acidity here to hold up the wine. I can taste that this is a well made wine, but I am not used to such sweetness, and it is a bit off putting. Only 8.5% alcohol, so perhaps that's why it is so sweet and cloying. After an hour open, the wine seems to get some backbone, and is no longer so cloying. Still, I am not really excited by this style of wine. I also get the slight spritz mentioned by previous tasters. 50+4+9+14+7=84

  • 2007 Weingut Bastgen Bernkastel-Cueser Weisenstein Riesling Spätlese 89 Points

    Part of the CT Forum Virtual Tasting Event. Cracked and poured at cellar temp. Golden yellow in colour. The nose is rather expressive with a strange smell...is that petrol? This is the first time I am smelling something like this in a wine! Interesting. After over an hour the notes of petrol persist, but there are some apple scents coming through as well. On the palate, not very sweet, and nice acidity, white fruits like apple and pear coming through. With more airtime, the apple hits through very strongly, but not sweet apple, rather crispy apple. This is very nice! 50+4+11+16+8=89

Closing

Interesting exercise, I could well get another bottle of the Spätlese, but the Kabinett was too sweet for me.
