    Reductive, with an odd combination of bubblegum and bell pepper. Bright but slightly thick in an oily sense without real heaviness.

  • 2006 Edi Kante Malvasia

    Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Carso

    Lots of soil on the nose here, but some sense of chlorine cleans it up. A light woodiness is present too, which transitions into a bready sort of flavor in the mouth, where the serious size and lowish acidity of the wine make it sit soundly and maybe heavily on the palate.

    Light red. Charred wood and tobacco smoke, with a slight stinkiness. Soft, sluggish, one-note palate.

    Light red. Vibrant and aromatic nose full of piercing cherries and raspberries. Bright attack builds towards a juicy midpalate, ending in a silken finish. Simple pleasures here.

  • 2007 Baricci Rosso di Montalcino

    Medium red. Simultaneously earthy and perfumey, with some green herb nuance. Medium in weight, there's nothing that stands out here yet the integration is beautiful.

  • 2007 La Fortuna Rosso di Montalcino

    Bright garnet-tinged ruby. Nose is high-toned to the point of almost being undetectable, although some candied red fruit emerges with swirling. Dense and jam-packed with acidity. Tannins are in check but this needs some time.

  • 2007 San Filippo Rosso di Montalcino Lo Scorno

    Medium dull red. Raisin, poop, and anise biscotti notes seem to come together in a more attractive fashion with swirling. More modern styled than the other Rossos featured here, with sweet fruit that never goes over the top.

  • 2004 Baricci Brunello di Montalcino

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Medium garnet. Sexy gingerbread, macerated raisin, and green apple jolly rancher nose. Big structure is nonetheless well integrated even at this age, giving the wine a chewy quality without any roughness. Decent length on the finish.

  • 2004 La Fortuna Brunello di Montalcino

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Medium red with no definite bricking. Menthol, licorice and prune notes, followed by high-toned flavors and a quite linear feel. Perfumed finish is nice but this really isn't ready to show what it's made of.
